Monroe Men’s Basketball Opens Season with Pair of Wins in Chesapeake Tournament

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The #14 Monroe College men's basketball team opened its 2015-16 campaign over the weekend with a pair of wins at the Chesapeake Tournament in Hagerstown, Maryland over the weekend.  The Mustangs defeated Hagerstown Community College 80-70 and then prevailed over Prince George Community College, 98-83.

Four Monroe players finished in double-figures against Hagerstown.  Taquan Givens, in his first action at Monroe, finished with 17 points and eight assists.  Hampus Ahlin and Will Tavares totaled 13 points each, while Lukas Landgren scored 11.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Monroe College football team closed out its 2015 season with a 23-13 loss to Dean College on Saturday in Massachusetts.  The undermanned Mustangs put up a valiant effort, led by sophomore quarterback, Jalen Jones, who threw a pair of touchdown passes.

Rakeem Langston and Elijah Smith were favorite targets for Jones on Saturday.  Langston hauled in four catches for 67 yards and a touchdown.  Smith added five receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown.  In the backfield, Donte Carter gained 90 yards on the ground, including an 18-yard scamper.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The College of New Rochelle Swim Team traveled to Maryland to take on the Notre Dame of Maryland Gators. In a narrowly contested meet, the Gators picked up a 50-36 victory against the Blue Angels.  CNR falls to 0-3 on the season.

CNR was led by senior Claudia Benitez (White Plains, NY) who picked up three, 2nd place finishes in the Individual Medley, 200 breast stoke and 100 breast stroke.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- A slow start coupled by a powerful Manhattanville hitting trio was more than the College of New Rochelle could overcome in the opening round of the ECAC Metro Region Playoffs Wednesday night.  The Blue Angels managed to climb back into the contest and made the game interesting, but in the end suffered a 3-0 (16-25, 18-25, 16-25) setback.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- he Iona College men’s water polo team saw their season come to an end on Sunday, Nov. 8 at the hands of their rival, Fordham.  On the second day of the CWPA Northern Championship, the Gaels fell short of the Rams, 13-6.

Sophomore Zach Roper led the Iona Gaels attacks with three goals on seven shots.  Junior Chris Ellis had two goals, and sophomore Jonathan Hulbert chipped in one score.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Iona College men’s water polo team split a pair on contests on the opening day of the CWPA Northern Division Championship.  The Maroon & Gold fell in their first contest to St. Francis Brooklyn, but kept their season alive by defeating Connecticut College later in the afternoon.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY --  The Iona College men's cross country team earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship with a second place team finish at the 2015 NCAA Northeast Regional Championships at historic Franklin Park. The No. 9 ranked Gaels finished 11 points shy of No. 2 Syracuse to earn its 14th straight team appearance at the national championship in Louisville, KY in eight days.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Sparkled by a combined 15 individual wins and four top relay times, the Iona College Men's and Women's swimming and diving team cruised to a pair of victories over new Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Monmouth University. The meet held at the Iona College Hynes Athletic Center saw the Maroon & Gold women record a 123-53 win, and men notch a 118-66 victory.

The win raises the Men's season record to 4-1 and the women move to 4-3 with their W.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Iona College women's cross country team finished 13th at the 2015 NCAA Northeast Regional Championship at historic Franklin Park. Senior Tara Jameson led the Gaels in the 6k event with at 37th place finish.

Jameson completed the event in 21:43.5. Senior Melissa Hawtin was Iona's second finisher in 65th place with a time of 22:10.4. Sophomore Rachel Garn (89th, 22:28.6) and freshmen Kristina Bozic (94th, 22:33.0) and Julia Kearley (104th, 22:38.1) were Iona's other scorers.
