Astorino Announces Military Family Appreciation Project

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino today announced the Military Family Appreciation Project to let Westchester families of military personnel and deceased veterans know that the county’s Veterans Service Agency is available to help them too. 

County Executive Rob Astorino listens as EJ Kearns describes how she contacted the county’s Veterans Service Agency to get help for her husband’s alcoholism. Paul Kearns, immediately to her left, received the help he needed and has been clean and sober for nearly two years.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle, with all of the terrific happenings in the Downtown and adjacent transit area, is primed for an Arts and Cultural District! CivicMoxie, the City’s consultant, has been working since September on the proposed district.  Their team has held focus groups with artists, arts groups, and cultural organizations, toured the downtown and adjacent areas, tabled at the PopRocs event downtown, and sent out a survey to local artists, performers, and organizations.

NEW YORK, NY -- Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman issued cease-and-desist letters to daily fantasy sports (“DFS”) wagering sites DraftKings and FanDuel on Tuesday, ordering both companies to immediately stop accepting wagers inside New York. The AG’s action follows an investigation by his office that found DraftKings and FanDuel to be in violation of New York State law against illegal gambling. Traditional, season-long fantasy sports are not implicated by the AG’s action.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Spanish writer José Ovejero visited The College of New Rochelle on Thursday, November 5, for a series of events sponsored by the Westchester Consortium for International Studies (WCIS), a partnership of the International Studies programs at CNR and Manhattanville College. Winner of the 2013 Alfaguara Novel Prize, one of the most prestigious Spanish-language literary awards, Ovejero presented a creative writing workshop and evening lecture at the College on “Spanish Fictions,” as well as a performance at Manhattanville on Friday, November 6.

Charlie "Rip" Collin, a Marina Fixture and Korean War Vet, Dead at 83

Charles T. Collins, a lifelong resident of New Rochelle, died on November 8, 2015. He was 83. Charles, known as “Rip” or “Charlie” to his friends was born on November 21, 1931 in New Rochelle to the late Charles A. and Margaret (O’Reilly) Collins. Charlie spent nearly his entire life on the water in and around New Rochelle; from his days as a 15 year-old launch operator for the Echo Bay Yacht Club, through his long career in marine construction piloting tugs, barges and dredges along the East Coast.

NEW YORK, NY -- Preet Bharara, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced that John Earvin, the former president of the United Federation of Law Enforcement Officers (“UFLEO” or the “Union”), was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Paul A. Engelmayer to three years of probation, including six months of home confinement. Earvin pled guilty on June 19, 2015, to one count of wire fraud.
