As reported yesterday by Talk of the Sound, the comment period for the Draft Remedial Investigation Work Plan for the City DPW Yard site (“site”) located at 224 Main Street, New Rochelle, Westchester County, has been extended. The original comment period expired on December 6, 2015. The comment period has been extended for 30 days, from December 6, 2015 through January 6, 2016.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- An elderly man smoking in bed caused a mattress fire early this morning at a house located at 291 Lincoln Avenue in New Rochelle, just two houses away from a massive structure fire 6 weeks ago.

The fire department was called to the secne at about 6:30 a.m. and by 7:00 a.m. had the fire under control.

Three other family members including an elderly woman self-evacuated as police arrived on the scene and pulled the man out of the smoke-filled room moments before the room burst into flames, said New Rochelle Deputy Fire Chief John Reed.

Pedestrian Struck, Seriously Injured in Motor Vehicle Accident Near New Roc City Stop and Shop

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- A man in his 30’s was rushed to a Bronx hospital after he was struck by a vehicle after stepping out onto Harrison Street near a side entrance of an apartment building located at 389 Main Street. 

The man was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in “serious condition”, according to New Rochelle Police Sergeant Myron Joseph. The man underwent brain surgery as a result of the collision.

The man was struck by the driver of a Ford Focus shortly after 7 p.m.

Thruway Authority Announces New Traffic Pattern On I-95 At Exit 15

ALBANY, NY -- The Thruway Authority today announced that the northbound and southbound lanes on I-95 (New England Thruway) at exit 15 (New Rochelle) will be shifted into a new configuration as a part of the rehabilitation of the Kings Highway Bridge. The work is scheduled for tonight, Thursday, Dec. 3 beginning at 11:00 p.m. until Friday, Dec. 4 at 5:00 a.m., and again on Friday Dec. 4 beginning at 11:00 p.m. until Saturday, Dec. 5 at 5:00 a.m.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle School Board Member David Lacher, the board's longest serving member, has been making the rounds of the Queen City recently to promote the New Rochelle School District’s $50 capital million bond. He appeared last night at a Democratic Party meeting to make his pitch.

Each time he speaks about this, he offers a three-part explanation as to why the District’s buildings are in a state of disrepair.

#1 GREAT RECESSION - the district chose to defer maintenance to lessen the impact of cuts to staff and programs due to the weak economy.

New Rochelle High School Cheerleaders Will Hold Festival of Champions This Weekend

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The New Rochelle High School Cheerleaders are having a Festival of Champions competition on Saturday, Dec 5th at Gym at New Rochelle High School.

Cheer teams from all over the tri-state will participate in this event.

The event will begin at 1 p.m.

Tickets costs $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12.

Food, drinks and merchandise will be for sale at the event.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY --The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Division of Environmental Remediation has agreed to extend the deadline for public comments about a draft work plan at the New Rochelle City Department of Public Works Yard located at 224 Main Street in New Rochelle, in response to a request from Talk of the Sound.

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- Jewish refugees who fled the horrors of the Nazis and the Holocaust, finding refuge in Shanghai between 1933 and 1941 at a time when few countries, including the U.S., would admit Jewish refugees. This exhibit has been well received across the country, and we are honored to present it here. The evening will include Keynote speeches by Shanghai Ghetto resident Ellen Chaim Kracko and by prominent Chinese and Israeli diplomats.
