New Rochelle Makes Unexpected Midnight Switch in Emergency Transportation Services

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The City of New Rochelle has terminated its contract with TransCare effective at midnight tonight.  Empress Emergency Medical Services will take over ambulance services under a 90-day emergency contract. A new emergency transportation contract will be put out for bid in the coming months.

The move came amidst a year of well-documented financial woes at TransCare.

Library Initiates New Book Club: “Cook by the Book”

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- A new book club exploring the library’s excellent collection of cookbooks and online food-related resources will begin this January at the New Rochelle Public Library. The club will meet once a month on a Saturday afternoon in the library’s meeting room, at which time thematic recipes and samples will be shared by the participants. To supplement some of the sessions local food cookbook authors will be invited to demonstrate recipes from their books.  All ages are invited to join the free program.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- A series of seven free African dance workshops for children ages 7 and up, and their parents and grandparents, will be held at the New Rochelle Public Library on Saturday mornings, from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon, beginning January 23rd and continuing through February 27th.  The popular workshops are led by Anthony Wooden of the Bokandeye African-American Dance Theater, who provides instruction of native African dances, while also exploring their meanings and the occasions on which they’re performed.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY --The New Rochelle Public Library and the Huguenot Children’s Library (HCL) are offering a great array of free programs for infants, toddlers and preschool children this winter-spring season.  Participation is drop-in, on a first-come, first-served basis. The free programs are made possible by the Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library and the Partnership for the Huguenot Children’s Library.  Most do not take place on days the New Rochelle Public Schools are closed for vacations.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY --The Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library will hold their annual Big Bargain Book Sale on Friday, January 8 and Saturday, January 9, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Library’s lobby.  A large array of quality used books--from popular novels and mysteries in hardcover and paperback, non-fiction in hard-cover and paperback, to children’s books, music cassettes, videos, and DVD’s--will be available for purchase at very affordable prices.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Congratulations are in order to Jack Hessel of New Rochelle High School who earned $1,500 from Erie Insurance as part of the insurer’s Shift driver safety program. To participate in the contest, teens earned points by doing things like taking a pledge to be a safe driver, creating safe-driver videos and posting safe driving messages on social media. Hessel finished in first place.
