NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- April is an action-packed month for the Habitat for Humanity of Westchester, and it all begins on April 1, with their annual “Yonkers Week”. The Westchester chapter will have builds and beautification projects all over the 20.3 square-mile city.

The annual Yonkers Week will be sponsored by Yonkers Brewing Company, Curtos Appliances and the law firm, Veneruso, Curtos, Schwartz &Curtos. The week-long event will kick-off with brunch at Yonkers Brewing Co. at 11:00a.m.on Monday, April 4, 2016.

State Labor Department Releases Preliminary March 2016 Area Unemployment Rates

NEW YORK, NY -- The New York State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for March 2016. Rates are calculated as prescribed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The State’s area unemployment rates rely in part on the results of the Current Population Survey, which contacts approximately 3,100 households in New York State each month.

This 73-minute film of Ian Ruskin’s acclaimed one-man play has gathered praise from all who have attended preview screenings. It is that rare historical drama that addresses a multitude of contemporary issues that challenge us today.

Library Reopens Memorial Highway Entrance Lawton Street Entrance Scheduled to be Closed for Construction

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The New Rochelle Public Library has reopened the Memorial Street doors to the building. The newly refurbished, greatly improved doorway now includes automatic doors to accommodate wheelchairs and strollers, a foyer and a book drop.

On Monday, May 2nd, the library’s Lawton Street doorway will be closed for construction.  This doorway will also be completely refurbished with energy-efficient, ADA compliant doors and a new protective awning. Completion is expected in Fall 2016.

The Beat Goes On With Foreclosures! Judgments Remain High While New Filings Decrease

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- Westchester County has both good and bad news on the foreclosure front.   A familiar pattern continues as the number of judgments entered on foreclosed properties rose over eight percent over the same period last year.  Encouragingly, the number of new foreclosure filings dropped almost twenty-seven percent when compared to last year’s first quarter.  The county has experienced a steady increase in foreclosed properties since 2011.  Last year one thousand one hundred and seventy-eight (1,178) actions were commenced, representing the highest total in recent memory.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The New York Lottery today announced a top prize winning ticket for the April 18, 2016 TAKE 5 drawing was sold at Stop & Shop at 2425 Palmer Avenue in New Rochelle. The ticket is worth $62,111.50.

In addition to the $62,111.50 top prize for the April 18 TAKE 5 drawing, which was won by matching five out of five numbers, 193 players each purchased winning tickets worth $482.50 by matching four out of five numbers for the drawing. In total, there were 85,518 TAKE 5 winners for the April 18 drawing.

Softball Snaps 62 Game Losing Streak; Defeats Pine Manor

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The College of New Rochelle softball team snapped a 62 game losing streak after picking up its first wins of the season this weekend against Pine Manor College.  The last time CNR earned a victory was April 5th, 2013 against Yeshiva University.

The two teams played a double, double-header on Saturday and Sunday.  CNR took the opening game 9-1 in 5 innings, then dropped game two 15-4, also in five.  Day two action saw a similar pattern as the Blue Angels were victorious in the first by a 6-1 margin, before falling in the finale 21-7 in five innings.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- For the second straight game, Quinnipiac scored a run in its final at bat to defeat the Iona College baseball team in a 3-2 decision in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at QU Baseball Field. The Bobcats scored a run in the eighth and ninth innings to earn the win.

Senior C Carmine Palummo was 2-for-5 with a run scored to lead the Gaels. Junior DH Alex Beckett drove in both Iona runs on a bases loaded walk in the third inning and an RBI single in the fifth. Senior RF Kyle DiVico had a hit and a run scored in the loss.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Iona College softball program dropped a pair of road Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference games to the Canisius College Golden Griffs on Sunday afternoon. Despite two homeruns for junior All-MAAC Preseason Team Member Kristen Turner, the Gaels could not out-muscle the bats of the victorious home squad.
