Legislators Announce Construction Grant for New Rochelle Public Library

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Senators Andrea Stewart-Cousins and George Latimer, along with Assembly Members Steve Otis and Amy Paulin, who together represent the City of Rochelle, are pleased to announce an important state construction grant award for the New Rochelle Public Library.

The New Rochelle library has been awarded $93,487 to replace an aging HVAC chiller with a modernized modular chiller system.  The grant is part of a $14 million capital fund appropriation for public library construction in the 2015 state budget.

NEW YORK, NY -- State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos today announced a new, comprehensive conservation plan to manage New York’s population of the bald eagle. The Conservation Plan for Bald Eagles in New York State describes the historic status, restoration efforts and current status of the bald eagle in the state and provides guidelines for future management actions.

Thieves steal items from vehicle: An unknown suspect or suspects allegedly stole a coin purse and a pair of sunglasses April 15 from a Nissan Suburban parked on Storer Avenue, according to a New Rochelle Police report. When police arrived, a man told them that that his wife had already left the scene with the vehicle. The man also told police his wife called them while on her way to work. The man said his wife parked the car at 8 p.m. April 14. When she returned at 6:30 a.m.

Ursuline hosts the 2016 UEN Leadership Conference

Ursuline School hosted the 2016 Ursuline Educational Network Student Leadership Conference last month, according to a news release.

About 38 girls from 11 Ursuline schools from across the country gathered to become successful leaders during the four-day event, the release said.

The youths also toured New York City, and attended a yoga session.

Vicki Hertlein, the director of Personal Development at Ursuline, and Jeanne DiBenedetto, the dean of Student Affairs at the Academy of Mount St. Ursula, offered sessions detailing the attributes of leaders, the release said.

City Council honors junior varsity cheerleaders

The New Rochelle City Council honored the junior varsity cheerleading team June 21 for becoming the 2015-2016 Westchester County champions, the regional champions at the Universal Cheerleaders Association's Northeast Championship, and earning fourth place at the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship, a news release said.

The presentation ceremony was held at the City Hall, where Mayor Noam Bramson praised the team’s achievements and applauded the exemplary characteristis of the athletes, the release said.

Albert Leonard and Isaac E. Young Middle School students take part in Full STEAM Ahead

Students from Albert Leonard Middle School and Isaac E. Young Middle School recently took part in Full STEAM Ahead, a program that showcased a year's worth of in-depth, multi-disciplinary learning across science, technology, engineering, art and math, according to information from the City School District of New Rochelle.

Sixth graders explored the dangers of "text neck," while seventh and eighth graders analyzed climate changes and investigated applications for technology.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The City School District of New Rochelle has hired one of the most accomplished Facilities Managers in the United States to lead a new team to replace the outgoing team from Aramark.

At tonight's annual reorganization meeting, Schools Superintendent Dr. Brian Osborne announced the hiring of Carl Thurnau, PE, Director of the New York State Education Department's Office of Facilities Planning.
