The New Rochelle School District’s Health & Safety Committee met Wednesday September 21st at City Hall.  It has now been six months since the committee was formed and I wish to share my notes and thoughts on the progress of establishing the District-Wide Health & Safety Committee and what sort of work is getting done (or not done) and how things have improved (or need to improve).

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- William B. Ward Elementary School is seeking sponsors for its 2016 Readathon, which kicks off Sept. 30 and is the school's largest annual fundraiser. Do you know a business or organization which can help?

Each year, students are challenged to read as many minutes as they can while raising money for Ward. Every student participates with this event. Last year students read over 1.6 million minutes, raising over $55,000!

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle Schools Facilities Manager Carl Thurnau made a presentation on the new lead-testing law to the District-Wide Health and Safety Committee.

On September 06, 2016, Gov. Cuomo signed legislation requiring that school districts test their water for lead.

NEW YORK, NY -- Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman announced the filing of a felony complaint charging two individuals for a scheme to rig the bidding process for three multimillion-dollar contracts. Alain Kaloyeros, 60, of Slingerlands, the President of SUNY Polytechnic Institute, has been charged with three felony counts of Combination in Restraint of Trade and Competition. Joseph Nicolla, 59, of Schenectady, the president of Columbia Development, has been charged with one felony count of Combination in Restraint of Trade and Competition.

New Rochelle’s Hugh Doyle Senior Center hosts NY Citizen Preparedness Training program

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- In observance of National Emergency Preparedness month, Hugh Doyle Senior Center hosted The NY Citizen Preparedness Training program on Wednesday, September 21 to a class of 80. Members of the senior center, local residents, and NRPD participated in a training workshop sponsored by the NY State Citizens Preparedness Corp. The class was presented by two instructors, Lt. Brett White and Lt. Tom Frost. The program provided citizens with the knowledge and tools to prepare for emergencies and disasters and their ensuing recovery periods.

State Education Department Releases New Draft NYS English and Mathematics Learning Standards for Public Comment

NEW YORK, NY -- The State Education Department today released new draft New York State P-12 English Language Arts and Mathematics Learning Standards for public comment, Commissioner MaryEllen Elia announced. Two committees comprised of more than 130 educators and parents recommended changing 60 percent of the ELA and 55 percent of the math standards.  SED is accepting public comments on the draft standards through Nov. 4.
