NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Serena Seales, a junior at New Rochelle High School, will be among 10 Westchester County students to be honored with the 2016 Milly Kibrick Youth Service Award for their outstanding contributions to their communities.

The award ceremony will be held at 6 p.m., Oct. 19, at Beckwith Pointe in New Rochelle. The award is given by the Westchester County Youth Board in memory of Milly Kibrick, a county social worker and youth activist who devoted her life to helping underprivileged children.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Barnard Early Childhood Center held its 15th Anniversary 9/11 Memorial Ceremony and Brick Unveiling from 11 a.m. to noon Sunday. 

The ceremony took place on the patio alongside Amy's Greenhouse, a living memorial to Amy O'Doherty, who perished at the age of 23 on September 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center. Amy was the daughter of Geraldine Davie, a since retired teacher at Barnard Early Childhood Center.

Columbus Chess Club Holds Summer Barbecue, 'Simul' Party

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Even before the start of the school year, some Columbus Elementary School students were exercising their brains.

Members of the Columbus Chess Club met Aug. 27 for their annual chess club barbecue and "simul" party. A simultaneous, or simul, is a board game in which a player of higher rank plays multiple games concurrently with several players.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The ReStore Music Fest 2016 will take place Saturday September 24th froom 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Habitat for Humanity of Westchester ReStore at 524 Main Street in New Rochelle, NY.

The current line up includes Mudsole, a traditional jazz band with a modern twist that takes the smell of New Orleans to the heart of Westchester.

"The infectious grooves will get the audience tapping their toes until the mud lingers a bit on the sole."

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Gregg Sloane, a 23-year veteran of the City School District of New Rochelle, has been appointed the district's new director of guidance and counseling. He takes over from Michael Kenny who retired over the summer.

Sloane started in the district in 1993 as a counselor at New Rochelle High School. He moved to Albert Leonard Middle School in the same capacity and continued there until he was picked for the new assignment.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle City Councilman Jared Rice is calling for the elimination of a provision in a proposed change to the City Charter that allow for automatic pay increases for Council Members including the Mayor

"After allowing the public process to take its course with respect to the issue of pay raises," said Rice "I'm of the opinion that city council should maintain its current procedure."

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Katherine A. Umbro, a Personnel Assistant in the Civil Service Department of the City School District of New Rochelle, working under Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Joseph Williams was fired Friday after failing a drug and alcohol test administered earlier in the week, sources say.
