Iona Sweeps Finale of Elon Tournament

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Iona College softball team swept the final day of the Elon Tournament with an emphatic 15-1 beating of Wagner and a dramatic 5-4 survival against Saint Joseph’s.  The team combined for nine extra base hits over the two games while freshman Marnie Skinner and sophomore Alana Evans through gems from the circle.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Iona College Lacrosse team struggled to gain traction in the second half against a fierce River Hawks squad, falling to UMass Lowell 11-6 Sunday afternoon.

For the Gaels (2-4, 0-0), Christine Gironda led the team with wo goals on five shots, while dishing out one assist and causing two turnovers. Jenna Tolzmann, Grace Celona, Rachelle Serafini, and Pamela Giordano each tallied one goal. Shannon McCaffrey got the start, making eight saves.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Despite leading by 10 on two occasions, the Iona College women’s basketball program fell in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship semifinals to top-seeded Quinnipiac, 64-59.  Iona led for the entirety of the second and third quarters but a 26 point fourth quarter by the Bobcats pushed the 2016-17 Regular Season Champions past the defending MAAC Championships.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The No. 3 seed Iona College men’s basketball team looks to make it three MAAC Championships in the past five seasons on Monday night against No. 4 Siena after using a second half surge to upend No. 2 Saint Peter’s this evening 73-65 this evening.

Trailing 28-24 at the half, the Gaels (21-12) outscored the Peacocks (19-13) 49-37 in the final 20 minutes to win by a final margin of eight points and advance to a fifth straight MAAC Championship Final and sixth in seven years under Head Coach Tim Cluess.
