WHITE PLAINS, NY -- Today, Attorney General Eric T. Schneideman and New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer announced the arrest of contractor Vickram Mangru on charges that he underpaid wages and benefits to workers on a publicly-funded New York City construction project. The arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into widespread allegations of prevailing wage theft at New York City public works projects.

Second Inning Offense Pushes #20 St. John's Past Iona Baseball, 16-4

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- An 11-run second inning allowed 20th ranked St. John's to upend the Iona College baseball program 16-4 earlier this evening in non-conference action at Jack Kaiser Stadium.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Red Storm (32-7) collected 11 hits to help tally 11 runs. The inning started with back-to-back single before the first run, Josh Shaw, scored on a sacrifice fly from Robbie Knightes. Five more singles resulted in the scored increasing to 5-0 for the hosts before Gui Gingras doubled to score two more runs.

Bravo US'20, 4x800 Relay Set Records at Annual New York Relays

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Freshman Pedro Bravo US'20 and the 4-by-800-meter relay team set records this past weekend at the 13th Annual New York Relays. Bravo broke the previous CHSAA league freshman 3,200-meter record by four seconds, while the relay team ran the fastest 4-by-800 in more than two years.

Bravo ran an incredible time of 9:42.45, good for the fifth-best 3,200 time in Iona Preparatory history and the fastest freshman in New York. And that was just Day 1.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle’s 5th  Annual Kite Day will take place at Davenport Park on Saturday, May 20th from 11AM to 3PM. This family-friendly event is open to all ages and features kite flying activities along with music by DJ Third Stone, food for sale from Beechmont Café, and family fitness games & activities by Crossfit P.O.P. and Pinebrook Fitness. Bring your own kite or use one of ours (limited number of kites available). In case of rain, the event will be rescheduled to May 21st.

Chess Championship Draws Students from Several Schools

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- William B. Ward Elementary School hosted a National Scholastic Chess Foundation Grand Prix tournament on Saturday, April 22, that attracted more than 100 students from across the district, and from schools in Westchester County and Connecticut.

Students from Ward, Columbus, Davis, Webster and Albert Leonard Middle School took part in the competition that is run by the National Scholastic Chess Foundation based in White Plains.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- High school teacher Darren Gurney donated a collotype of Norman Rockwell's iconic painting "The Problem We All Live With" to the district at Tuesday's Board of Education meeting on behalf of his father, Clark Gurney, a longtime city resident.

The painting will be permanently displayed at New Rochelle High School.

Clark Gurney has lived in the same home in New Rochelle for the past 50 years. Both of his sons went to NRHS, and he's been a huge supporter of the school's baseball team over the years.

Davis Holds First Daddy-Daughter Dance

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Davis Elementary held its first Daddy-Daughter Dance last month, attracting dozens of families and bringing fun and excitement to the school community.

Approximately 180 girls participated in the dance that was held in the school gym last Friday. Balloons and streamers adorned the venue, a DJ played music, and pizzas, heroes and snacks were served.

A photo booth was set up for daddy-daughter pictures.
