'We Are One' Bridges Gap in New Rochelle Schools

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Edie Barasch’s son came home one day and told his mom his younger brother might not be ready to start school at Ward Elementary.

Barasch eventually found out her older son had seen students bullying a special needs peer, and he was afraid for his younger sibling, who is nonverbal and developmentally disabled, to go to school there.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Creativity was alive and well at this week's Poetry Out Loud event. More than 70 elementary and middle school students from across the district read their original poetry on stage Monday. The annual event was presented by the Jeremy Scheinfeld Publishing Center, a program of the New Rochelle Fund for Educational Excellence.

Schools Hosted Guests from the Ukraine

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Our schools hosted guests from the Ukraine last week. Representatives from the town and school district of Berezhany came here to gain an understanding of U.S. teaching methods and curriculums. The visitors have returned home with plans to improve their students' education and help rebuild their struggling schools. The visitors were most impressed with our teachers' organization and preparation for daily lessons and how they coordinate the curriculum across grade levels.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new employment office, the “First Source Referral Center,” at 247 North Avenue was held on Friday, May 26.
