Students in the Young Engineers School Summer Math, Science and Engineering Academy Shot Off the Rockets

September 03, 2017 - 09:48

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Students in the Young Engineers School summer math, science and engineering academy shot off the rockets they'd spent much of the week building.

The group is made up of students from Albert Leonard and Isaac E. Young middle schools. The classes are at Albert Leonard.

Some of the rockets were Estes models, fired off with gunpowder. Others were assembled from household objects including a plastic soft drink bottle and the cardboard cylinder from a roll of paper towels, and shot skyward with water pressure.

New Rochelle Embracing High Expectations

September 03, 2017 - 09:36

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- All summer, Lou DiRienzo tweaked his practices and workouts to foster more competition. There were one-on-one drills and they all came with a carrot: The winner skipped pushups or running laps and got to delight in watching a teammate sweat.

With so much talent back and so much success within his team's reach, DiRienzo wanted the players to know that winning won't be easy.

He'll be the one to make sure of it.

"We need to learn how to compete," the New Rochelle coach said. "I don't think we knew how to compete last year."

Eclipse 2017 from New Rochelle High School

September 03, 2017 - 08:50

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- By the hundreds, they came to McKenna Field at New Rochelle High School this afternoon to get a look at Eclipse 2017.

The total eclipse was far to the south, but that didn't stop New Rochelle residents from answering the school's invitation to gather on the field to see what they could see of it from here. They came with cardboard-and-plastic eclipse glasses and other devices for witnessing the event.
