New Rochelle School District Adds Eid al-Fitr to 2018-19 Calendar

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The City School District of New Rochelle calendar for 2018-2019 includes a newly added holiday: the Islamic celebration of Eid al-Fitr, which will be observed on June 5, 2019.

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, and falls on the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar. The date will shift from year to year because the Islamic lunar calendar differs from the Gregorian calendar.

Frank Valencia Indicted on Weapon and Assault Charges in Case Unrelated to the Shooting of Yonkers Police Officer

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. announced

Frank Valencia of New Rochelle has been indicted by the Westchester County Grand Jury on the following charges:

  • Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a class C felony
  • Attempted Assault in the First Degree, a class C felony

These charges stem from an incident Sept. 11, 2017. The indictment alleges, Valencia fired a weapon multiple times at a vehicle occupied by several people.  No one was injured.

New Rochelle Residents Address Task Force at Public Meeting

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Seventeen residents addressed the New Rochelle Task Force on Reducing Violence in the Lives of Children and Youth on Saturday, April 14, to offer suggestions and other input aimed at keeping the community and City School District of New Rochelle schools safe.

They spoke at a public meeting of the Task Force in New Rochelle City Hall. More than 70 residents attended, including many of the Task Force members.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Sam Rosenberg and Evan Phillips, both 14 and freshmen at New Rochelle High School, organized and hosted this weekend’s third annual BE A GOOD COOKIE Lacrosse Tournament. This year the two raised more than $12,000, bringing the three-year total to $37,500 in support of children’s cancer research.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Science Research students at New Rochelle High School continue to win accolades beyond the city limits, with two students winning awards in the Regeneron Westchester Science & Engineering Fair, and four attending the recent 33rd Annual Upstate Junior Science and Humanities Symposium at SUNY Albany.
