Columbus Chess Teacher Honored with NSCF 2017 Scholastic Service Award

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Despite persistent rain and gusty breezes, over 150 children and parents came out for an afternoon of chess on Columbus Day at the New Rochelle Public Library. The event, produced by the National Scholastic Chess Foundation, featured open play for all ages and abilities, and a simultaneous game where NSCF instructor Ricardo Perez Billinghurst, a National Master, prevailed over 20 challengers from New Rochelle Public Schools.

Gilda’s Club Westchester and Newyork-Presbyterian Lawrence Hospital Form Cancer Support Partnership

NEW YORK, NY -- NewYork-Presbyterian Lawrence Hospital and Gilda’s Club Westchester are partnering on a new program that will bring Gilda’s Club Westchester’s widely acclaimed cancer support services to the Bronxville-based hospital.  The partnership will allow patients at NYP Lawrence and the southern Westchester community to participate in the Gilda’s Club Westchester programs, regardless of where they receive their cancer treatments.  The programs are free.

Astorino Teams Up with Yankees Great Mariano Rivera to Ship Supplies to Puerto Rico

Astorino today teamed up with Yankees great Mariano Rivera and his wife, Clara Rivera, to deliver a donation of essential supplies that will be shipped by The Mariano Rivera Foundation to aid recovery efforts in Puerto Rico.

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino announced that the 50th Anniversary Westchester Sports Hall of Fame dinner and ceremony will be held beginning at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Westchester County Center in White Plains.

“I congratulate the inductees for the hard work and dedication that has earned them a place in the Hall of Fame,” Astorino said. “This year we are celebrating the Hall of Fame’s 50th anniversary of recognizing the talent in Westchester that has had such an important impact in advancing sports.”

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- October is Fire Prevention Month, and October 8th – 14th is National Fire Prevention week. This year’s theme - “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!”- reinforces the need for everyone to have an escape plan.

New Rochelle Court, Three Others, Designated Hub Treatment Court by Westchester District Attorney

WHITE PLAINS, NY --  Westchester District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. who campaigned on a platform to create coordinated drug treatment courts in Westchester County, announced that Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, White Plains and Yonkers are now designated as “Hub” Courts.

 

The “Hub” Court designation will make drug treatment courts accessible to individuals who suffer from alcohol and drug dependency and military veterans who have had run-ins with the law. Their cases can now be transferred to the “Hub” Courts.
