International Violinist Plays for NRHS Music Students

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Semmy Stahlhammer, an internationally acclaimed violinist from Sweden, told New Rochelle High School students his influences in learning his instrument of choice were wide-ranging.

They include other violinists, sure. But also ballet dancers, singers, and even Jimi Hendrix. If the Swedish string master's performances don't evoke the hard-driving songs of the rock guitarist, that's no matter. Stahlhammer advised students to draw inspiration wherever they can.

District Completes Delayed School Opening Drill

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Monday's delayed school opening drill was mostly successful with a few hiccups that will be worked out, said Director of Transportation William Miller. The delayed opening was a test of procedures to determine if the District could efficiently transport students when the high school and middle schools need to open two hours later and the elementary schools open three hours later.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- In her first days as Interim Superintendent of the City School District of New Rochelle, Dr. Magda Parvey spent much of her time visiting the schools that are now in her care.

It was a practice she followed in her role as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and Chief Academic Officer, which she took when she arrived in the District two years ago. After the Board of Education named her the District's top educator this week, she made a point to visit the schools again in her new role to communicate directly with the staff and students.

New York State’s Raise the Age Law in Effect as of October 1st

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- The District Attorney’s Office (DAO) has been actively involved in working groups preparing for the change in legal status of 16- and 17-year-old offenders. The law raises the age of criminal responsibility to 18. New York was previously one of only two states that automatically prosecuted 16- and 17-year-olds as adults. The new legislation includes statutory amendments that among other things creates a new Adolescent Offender (AO) classification and establishes a new Youth Part in Superior Court.

Postal Inspectors and Pelham Police Arrest 3 for Mail Theft in Pelham and New Rochelle

NEW YORK, NY -- Postal Inspectors and the Village of Pelham Police Department arrested three individuals for stealing mail from the blue collection boxes in Pelham and New Rochelle, NY.

Over the past several months, the United States Postal Inspection Service, Pelham PD and the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office Investigations Division, have been investigating incidents of mail theft from the blue collection boxes. These crimes often occurred under the cover of darkness when most residents are in their homes and when these suspects believed no one was watching.

New Rochelle Teen Pleads Guilty To Assault Of High School Student

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- Bryan Stamps, 15,  of New Rochelle pleaded guilty to Assault in the First Degree, a class B felony, related to a stabbing at New Rochelle High School Jan. 18, 2018. Westchester County Court Judge Barry Warhit accepted the plea.

Stamps has been remanded into custody at Woodfield Cottage in Valhalla. He is scheduled to appear in Westchester County Court for sentencing Jan. 24, 2019. At that time, Stamps will be sentenced to 1-3 years in state prison.
