NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Here are some highlights from the Oct. 30 Board of Education meeting:

Lincoln Attendance Zone: The Board returned to the Lincoln attendance zone this week with a second meeting at the Boys and Girls Club of New Rochelle - Remington Unit. The meeting took place in an area of the city that was served by the Lincoln Elementary School before it closed in the 1960s following a landmark desegregation case.

ALMS PTA Hosts First Family Math Night

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Albert Leonard Middle School PTA STEAM Committee organized the school's first Family Math Night. More than 100 students and their parents participated during an evening in late October to play an array of games and sports activities that involved math and logical reasoning.

The Family Math Night was not just fun; it found interesting ways to connect directly to our curriculum.

Ward Introduces New Mascot, Willie the Wolf

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The students at the William B. Ward Elementary School have a new friend to cheer them on. Willie the Wolf, the school's new mascot, waved and danced with the students last Friday for the school's monthly spirit day.

With blue and white fur, he is the newest of several school mascots in the City School District of New Rochelle. Now that he's been introduced, he'll be bringing an extra burst of energy to Ward events and to key moments in school, helping to congratulate classes that are awarded for good behavior, for instance.

TheatreWorks Players to Conjure Up Witch Trials

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The TheatreWorks players at New Rochelle High School are preparing to bring audiences back to the Salem witch trials of the 1690s next weekend with performances of "The Crucible."

Conjuring up the Puritan New England era depicted in Arthur Miller's powerful classic takes focus.

"It's its own world, and we just jump into it at that moment in time," said Isabella Vianna, a senior who portrays Elizabeth Proctor in the show, the TheatreWorks annual non-musical play.

Barnard Students Vote for Their Favorite Books

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- While parents in the community got to cast ballots in the mid-term election this week, the students at the Henry Barnard Early Childhood Center also exercised their right to vote. The students may not be able to help choose a senator or governor just yet, but they did get to pick their favorites from among Curious George, Amelia Bedelia, the Very Hungry Caterpillar and more.

Huguenots Move on to AA State Regional Final

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle High School's varsity football team will now play Section 9 winner Newburgh Free Academy in the Class AA state regional final, after topping No. 1-seeded John Jay-East Fishkill, 26-9, last weekend for the Section One Class AA championship and the team's fourth consecutive Section championship.

The football team stretches before practice this week.

Town Hall Meeting to Focus on Restorative Justice

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Restorative Justice will be the exclusive focus of the Board of Education's next Town Hall meeting, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14. The session will be held in a new location, the Ossie Davis Theater of the NEW ROCHELLE PUBLIC LIBRARY, on Lawton Street and Memorial Drive between Main and Huguenot streets.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Magda Parvey and members of the administrative team will be on hand to answer questions from community members, which will be read by a moderator at the meeting. Community members may submit questions in advance at

Seven NRHS Students Named to National Honor Society

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Seven New Rochelle High School students joined the school's chapter of the National Honor Society recently, when they were celebrated for academic excellence, character and civic responsibility.

The new members are: Tyler Greene, Jasmine Lopez, Deontray McGill, Owen McKinney, Jack Rieger, Ayda Tuku and Andrea Velez-Davis. They were inducted by Interim Principal Joseph Starvaggi in the Linda E. Kelly Theater at New Rochelle High School.

11/10 The Sharing Shelf of FSW’s Fall Teen Boutique 11 AM

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- This Saturday, The Sharing Shelf of FSW, in partnership with the Junior League of Westchester on the Sound, will host its fall Teen Boutique. Teen Boutique is a free, one-day pop-up clothing boutique for girls ages 13 to 19 from low-income households. Racks of new and gently used clothing are set up to create a trendy boutique atmosphere and girls are invited to choose and take home a week’s worth of clothing from thousands of donated items. The event is not open to the public, girls are selected to attend by social service agencies that partner with the program.
