NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Community leaders gathered recently in the annual New Rochelle High School Civics Symposium to debate the hot topics of the day, responding to arguments made by NRHS students.

Five students' papers, filled with substantive research, presented positions on gun control, gerrymandering, political correctness, the question of police bias and the disparate effects of the Drug War on people of color. The issues kept the discussion rolling among the panelists, who had been provided with the papers in advance.

Astorino Announces $6 Million for Youth Programs

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- County Executive Robert P. Astorino today announced that grants totaling more than $6 million – $2,123,000 annually for 2018, 2019 and 2020 – will be awarded to 34 agencies for 56 at-risk youth programs under Westchester’s Invest-In-Kids program.

“Invest-In-Kids is a vital partnership between Westchester County and our non-profits that responds to the needs of Westchester’s youth,” Astorino said. “I am excited to partner with these 34 agencies to provide essential services with far-reaching, positive results for our at-risk youth population.”

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Proposed changes in federal tax policy may reduce the deduction for local property taxes in 2018, it might be in the financial interest of property owners in the City of New Rochelle to pre-pay 2018 property taxes before the end of this year to maximize their 2017 deduction.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Fueled by three double-doubles, the Monroe College women's basketball team wrapped up the Montgomery College Holiday Tournament on Sunday with an 80-69 victory over host Montgomery to claim the tournament title. The Mustangs improve to 8-5 overall on the season after going 2-0 over the weekend.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- City officials joined the New Rochelle Police Department at their Promotional Ceremony on December 15th in the City Council Chambers. Eight members of the NRPD were recognized at the service. Family and friends were also in attendance to share in this special occasion. This was the last promotional ceremony led by Police Commissioner Patrick Carroll.

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- Delivering on a two-term plege to protect taxpayers and deliver essential services, County Executive Robert P. Astorino today vetoed a Board of Legislators budget that included a 2 percent tax hike.

In his message to legislators, the County Executive emphasized that he delivered a balanced and fiscally prudent budget that meets the needs and obligations of Westchester residents – without increasing the property tax levy.

Astorino Announces New Rochelle Joins Drug Takeback Program

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- Residents throughout Westchester now can conveniently and safely dispose of their unused medications in a secure dropbox, accessible day or night in nearly every municipality.

The county’s newest dropbox is in New Rochelle, in the lobby at police headquarters, at 475 North Ave. Recently delivered by Westchester County, it was one of 12 purchased last year through an $8,000 grant secured by Sen. Terrence P. Murphy in response to the growing opioid addiction crisis.
