Three Teens Indicted for Events that Resulted in the Death of New Rochelle H.S. Student Valeree Schwab

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. announced today that the Westchester County Grand Jury has indicted Z’inah Brown for the January stabbing death of another New Rochelle High School student, 16-year-old Valeree Schwab.

Brown has been indicted on one count of each of the following charges:

·         Murder in the Second Degree, a class A-1 felony

·         Manslaughter in the First Degree, a class B felony

·         Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree, a class A misdemeanor

Sincere Smith of New Rochelle Pleads Guilty to Robbery in Ossining

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. announced that Sincere Smith (DOB 05/10/95) pleaded guilty Monday to Robbery in the First Degree, a class B felony, for a robbery that took place in the Village of Ossining Feb. 12, 2017. He is scheduled to be sentenced June 13, 2018, and faces up to 25 years in prison. Smith, of New Rochelle, is currently in custody in Westchester County awaiting sentencing.

Global Firm ‘Guidepost Solutions’ Chosen to Conduct Safety, Security Assessment

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Guidepost Solutions LLC, a global security consulting firm based in Manhattan, has been chosen to conduct a security assessment of the City School District of New Rochelle schools.

The New Rochelle Board of Education voted to hire the company at its Tuesday meeting.

101 Students Inducted into National Honor Society

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle High School inducted 101 students into the National Honor Society earlier this week in a ceremony that highlighted the four standards that are central to a society member: leadership, character, service and scholarship.

The ceremony was held on May 22 in the Whitney M. Young Jr. Auditorium. Each of the inductees received a certificate. Art Faculty member Alexandra Brock was honored at the ceremony.

New Rochelle Board of Ed Terminates City Snowplow Driver for Time Theft

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Lamont Taylor of New Rochelle recently held two jobs, one working for the City and the other for the School District. After a reader tip to Talk of the Sound, Taylor may soon have neither.

Taylor worked both for the School District’s Buildings and Grounds Department as a Cleaner at Ward Elementary School and for the City of New Rochelle in the Public Works Department’s Sewers and Drains Bureau.

The news was announced via an email sent to the Community" by New Rochelle Board of Education President Rachel Relkin:

Dear Community:

We are writing to share an update that Superintendent Dr. Brian Osborne has informed the Board of Education he wishes not to extend his contract that expires on June 30, 2019 due to personal reasons. It is his intention to remain as superintendent through the 2018-19 school year.

New Rochelle Schools Moves to Terminate Employee for Time Theft

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The New Rochelle Board of Education began a formal removal process to terminate another buildings and grounds employee, believed to be the sixth this school year.

The Board voted Tuesday to end the probationary period of Louis Apicella as a Painter-Working Foreman, effective June 15, 2018 as a prelude to his termination and criminal referral for time theft.
