New Rochelle Police Arrest Elementary School Employee Following Complaint of Inappropriateness Behavior

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Raphael F. De Souza, 24, of 40 Locust Hill Avenue in Yonkers was arrested Thursday by New Rochelle Police on 2 counts of Forcible Touching, a class A misdemeanor. De Souza is a U.S. citizen.

De Souza was arrested after a complaint was filed earlier in the day by school officials. He was arraigned Friday and released on a $500 cash bond.

In a statement issued Friday, the City School District of New Rochelle disclosed they had reported to police “alleged inappropriate behavior” by an employee.

New ALMS Mural Spreads Message of Kindness

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Albert Leonard Middle School students returning to class this month found a bright new mural encouraging them to be kind.

Larry Minetti, an ALMS parent and an art teacher in the Bronx, spent many of his summer evenings at the school, creating a stairwell mural, 18 feet tall and 10 feet wide, that students couldn't miss. Its anti-bullying message, in vibrant letters: "One kind word can change someone's entire day."

Celebrating 'Life and Light' at Amy's Greenhouse

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- They come each year to honor Amy Doherty, who was lost in the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001, and to celebrate the place of "light and life" that has grown from her memory.

They gather at the Henry Barnard Early Childhood Center, home to Amy's Greenhouse, which was built with donations in Doherty's name. It has become a center of learning and personal growth for students.

Outreach Committee Seeking Members

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Advocacy and Outreach Committee, which advocates for the District through engagement with community organizations, elected officials, students, families, staff and the public at large, is seeking five members from the community. Meetings are expected to be held on the second Wednesday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon at Central Administration.
