Rev. Dr. Derrick Harkins To Speak At Iona College

April 23, 2012 - 13:04

New Rochelle, NY (April 23, 2012) Rev. Dr. Derrick Harkins, National Director of Faith Outreach, Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Senior Pastor, The Nineteenth Street Baptist Church will be the keynote speaker at the Jack Rudin and John G. Driscoll Distinguished Visiting Professorship at Iona College on Monday, April 23. Dr. Harkins will speak on "Faith, Values and the Public Square." The lecture will take place at Iona College's Christopher J. Murphy Auditorium in Murphy Center at 3:30 pm. This event is free and open to the community.

Dr. Harkins has most recently spoken out regarding the Trayvon Martin case. Saying last month: "I have never felt as sad and angry as I have been over these last few days...This is an assault on one of our most precious jewels and I said during the service that in America no one should be able to indict, prosecute and execute someone for the crime of being a young black man."

Iona College Students Support St. Baldrick's and Locks of Love

April 12, 2012 - 19:43

On March 22, the Iona community came together and saw members of its student body, faculty and staff shave their heads and cut their hair for St. Baldrick’s and Locks of Love. In the past, both causes have seen separate events on campus, but this year their planning committees brought them together to show Iona how much power can come from hair.
The St. Baldrick’s Committee, headed by Kirsten Knott, brought together the Iona Rugby Team, the Gaelic Society, Psi Kappa Phi, and Pipe Band. These four organizations joined sorority Delta Theta Beta, which puts on Locks of Love yearly at Iona.
By bringing these two events together, they were able to bring in more people and show what a large impact both have on cancer research and those who suffer from hair loss due to cancer.
In the Hynes Athletic Center, barbers from Spotlight were on a stage with chairs waiting for shavees and girls donating their hair to come forward. There was food donated from Blackboard, Smokehouse and AJ’s Burgers.
With the event starting at 7 p.m., it is no surprise that this food was gone within half an hour. There were also raffles with prizes such as gift cards to local restaurants.

New Rochelle, NY (March 1, 2012) - Iona College was granted approval by the New Rochelle Planning Board on Tuesday, February 28, 2012, to move forward with plans to build Walsh Residence Hall on existing campus property.

The reconstruction of Walsh Hall, located in the center of campus, will be funded by Iona College and will include three stories of residential housing that will accommodate 115 students and is part of the College’s mid-term plan to meet occupancy needs. The Walsh building will be razed and foundation work will begin sometime in May, with completion scheduled in the 2012 fall semester.

"This favorable outcome is a reflection of the benefits of active community planning and improving relationships with the city and community," said Dr. Joseph E. Nyre, president of Iona College. “I thank Mayor Bramson and members of the planning group who recently submitted an interim report to the City of New Rochelle and Iona College.”
