Sound Shore Medical Center of Westchester Awarded Scientific Prizes

Image003(New Rochelle, NY) -- Sound Shore Medical Center (SSMC) is pleased that its long-established tradition of producing winning medical research continues. With six finalists presenting at the American College of Physicians and five at the Medical Society of the State of New York, SSMC representatives won prizes at both scientific meetings.

Last month five of SSMC’s residents and one of its medical students received invitations to present their research posters at the American College of Physicians in New Orleans. The finalists included Sara Shahram, Sound Shore Medical Center’s 4th-year medical student from St. George’s University, who won the Students’ Research Category at this national forum.

In addition, five Sound Shore Medical Center medical residents joined a select group of 50 presenters for the annual Medical Society of the State of New York Research Poster Symposium held in April at Saratoga Springs. In a highly-selective and very competitive arena, SSMC’s Jacklin Salvador, MD won first prize in the Clinical Vignette Category.

New Rochelle Dethroned as Westchester County Water Champ

Despite winning a state-wide contest just last August, New Rochelle was unable to hold off Cortlandt, NY at the Westchester County level.

The Westchester County Department of Health held its annual water tasting contest on May 8th in White Plains, where 203 residents sampled water from nine of the county’s water suppliers.

“The annual drinking water contest is a great way to showcase the fine quality of our public water supply,” said Sherlita Amler, MD, commissioner of health. “The local, county and state professionals who monitor our public water systems to ensure safe drinking water for county residents deserve our thanks.”

Westchester County Board of Legislators Awards Fifteen $10,000 Jandon College Scholarship Including Four to New Rochelle Student

(White Plains, NY) -- The Westchester County Board of Legislators (BOL) awarded the 2012 Jandon College Scholarship to academic achievers in Westchester County including 4 students from New Rochelle.

The four students from New Rochelle High School are Nyshieka Cardoza, Ghispel Cibrian, Raphael Cisneros and Emily Posner.

“It’s always gratifying to be able to recognize and honor a group of students who have demonstrated academic excellence and a high level of community involvement,” said Jenkins. “The Board of Legislators works closely with the Jandon Foundation in its efforts to support and encourage Westchester’s best and brightest youth towards academic success, and we look forward to hearing about the achievements of these outstanding young people in the future.”

The Jandon Scholars Program, administered by the Jandon Foundation and the BOL, annually awards 15 college scholarships. Based on financial need, academic achievement and service to local communities, each Jandon scholar receives a $10,000 scholarship toward college as well as a laptop computer.

Westchester Republicans Set to Endorse Candidates for 37th Senate District and the 93rd Assembly District at 2012 Convention in Hastings-on-Hudson

The Westchester Republican County Committee will hold its 2012 Convention to endorse candidates for the 37th Senate District and the 93rd Assembly District. These are the newly created districts. The Convention will be held at Westchester Manor located at 140 Saw Mill River Road, Hastings-on-Hudson. The Convention starts at 7:30 pm on May 16th.

The 37th Senate District retains the same number and is now comprised of Bedford, Eastchester, Harrison, Mamaroneck, New Rochelle (part), North Castle, Rye City, Rye Town, White Plains (part) and Yonkers (part).

The 93rd Assembly District is now comprised of Bedford, Harrison, Lewisboro, Mount Kisco, New Castle, North Castle, North Salem, Pound Ridge, and part of White Plains. The 93rdAssembly District is the old 89th Assembly District. Assemblyman Bob Castelli’s seat is now the 93rd Assembly District.

This event is free and open to the public. Only those District Leaders representing Election Districts in the 37th Senate District and those District Leaders representing Election Districts in the 93rd Assembly District will be allowed to vote at the convention.

Monroe's Schedules Set For National Track Meet in Texas

MonroeWagner 0268Gambian distance runner Ansu Sowe will be the first Mustang on the track in the 2012 NJCAA Division I Outdoor National Track Meet that begins Tuesday in Levelland, TX when he runs in the men's 10,000m at 8:50pm (10:50pm NY time). Then on Wednesday, the Mustangs will have nine student-athletes competing in seven events starting with the women's 4x100m taking place at 1:45pm (3:45pm NY time) and ending the day with the men's 4x400m at 7:00pm (9:00pm NY time). The national meet culminates for Monroe on Thursday with Lithuanian discuss thrower Tautvydas Kieras and Columbian pole vaulter Francisco Escobar, both of whom are ranked among the nation's best. "Ansu's 10,000 is a good way to open the meet for us," said Coach Mark Goodman. "We think he's going to do very well and that's going to set the tone for the rest of our week. We're going in as a team and the mutual support between our athletes should boost us all. We're excited, but confident that our year of hard work will pay off."

Westchester County LGBT Town Hall Meeting May 23 To Celebrate Accomplishments

The Westchester County LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) Advisory Board will hold a Town Hall Meeting Wednesday, May 23 to celebrate achievements and present awards recognizing outstanding community service. The event will take place at The LOFT, 252 Bryant Avenue, White Plains, beginning at 5:30 p.m. LGBT community members and their friends, families and allies are invited to attend.

Awards will be given to Ossining Mayor William Hanauer, Starwood Hotels and Resorts, B Lounge of Valhalla and My Sister’s Place, an organization dedicated to ending domestic violence and human trafficking, The event will include opening remarks by County Executive Robert P. Astorino, a presentation by the LGBT Advisory Board on its work for the community over the past year, and an open microphone session for participants to voice concerns and suggestions directly to the board.

Westchester County Seniors Reminded To Take Economic Security Survey

Seniorcouple(White Plains, NY) -- Westchester County residents age 60 and older who have not yet taken the county survey to learn if their incomes cover their basic needs without public or private subsidies are encouraged to do so at this time.

“We need the data from this survey to have a better picture of where we can put our limited dollars to best impact seniors,” said Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino. “Don’t delay taking part.”

The survey is sponsored by the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services and the county’s Department of Senior Programs and Services (DSPS) in conjunction with its Livable Communities initiative.

The Elder Economic Security Standard Index – also known as the Elder Economic Security Survey – measures the economic security of older adults by determining whether or not they have sufficient income to pay for their basic needs: food, transportation, health care insurance and housing.

Astorino Invites Veterans, Service Members To Annual Tribute At Playland May 27

The event, sponsored by Westchester County, runs from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. The Westchester Police Emerald Society Pipe and Drum Corps will perform at the main gate at noon. At 1:30 p.m., County Executive Robert P. Astorino will deliver a tribute in memory of those who have lost their lives in defense of the United States. There will a helicopter and Osprey Flight demonstration provided by the U.S. Marine Corps at 2 p.m., weather permitting.

The barbecue is co-sponsored by Fordham University and The Generoso Pope Foundation.

(New Rochelle, NY) -- New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo held a press conference at The College of New Rochelle on May 10, 2012 to announce ground-breaking legislation to protect people with special needs and disabilities.

More than 200 representatives of local community organizations, members of the CNR Community, press from all the major news outlets, and government officials filled the College’s Maura Ballroom for the event.

CNR President Judith Huntington welcomed the Governor, praising him for the legislation, which she said sets a “new standard of care and protection for our most vulnerable populations.
