The proposed school district budget for the 2012-2013 school year is $234,174,978, an increase of 1.43% on a budget to budget basis with a projected tax rate increase of approximately 4.13%. The actual tax rate is determined in the fall when the city’s tax roll is set.

The proposed library budget is $4,468,996 based on a 2.2% in the tax levy for New Rochelle residents. This translates to an increase of $93,209 in the tax levy. The increase is below the New York State property tax cap.Read more
(New Rochelle, NY) -- UNESCO has declared April 23rd as World Book Day, an annual celebration of reading and books, which will see tens of thousands of people share books with others in their communities across America to spread the joy and love of reading. The date was chosen due to the anniversary of Cervantes’ death, as well as Shakespeare’s birth and death.
Successfully launched in the U.K. in 2011, World Book Night will also be celebrated in the U.S. in 2012, with news of more countries to come in future years. This is the event’s inaugural year in the U.S.
The New Rochelle Public Library distributed free books (Q is for Quarry, by Sue Grafton), which were provided by World Book Night organization, at the New Rochelle Metro North Train Station.Read more
A delightful inter-generational concert, “Love Makes the World Go Round”, will be presented in the Ossie Davis Theater of the New Rochelle Public Library on Saturday, May 5th at 3:00 pm. Young singers from Songcatchers will join singers from the Hugh A. Doyle Senior Center and Garito Manor for a concert featuring songs of love, joy, happiness and peace. The free concert is made possible by a grant from Communities For All Ages and the Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library.Read more
(New Rochelle, NY) -- The 32nd annual Our Children, Our Artists exhibit will be featured at the New Rochelle Public Library from April 30th through May 24th in both the Lumen Winter Gallery and Community Gallery of the Library. The art work of students in the city’s seven elementary schools will be on display from April 30th through May 9th; and the work of middle and high school students will be exhibited from May 16th through May 23rd. The exhibit is curated by Erica Bogin, artist and art teacher.

A public hearing on the library budget will take place on Thursday, May 3 at 7:00 p.m. in the library’s Ossie Davis Theater, before the May meeting of the library’s Board of Trustees, which will begin at 7:30 p.m.
The annual vote to elect two New Rochelle Public Library trustees and to adopt the 2012 – 2013 New Rochelle Public Library budget will take place on Tuesday, May 15, from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., at the City School District polling places. Copies of the proposed budget are available to the community at the Administrative Office of the New Rochelle Public Library and on the library’s website at www.nrpl.org.

As a result of the increased risk of fire caused by a combination of high winds, low relative humidity and very little rain, County Parks Commissioner Kathleen O’Connor today announced a ban on open fires at all county parks.
While this ban is in effect, charcoal and propane fires will only be permitted for cooking in permanently fixed grills in the parks. No open fires are permitted. She also asked that patrons be vigilant in alerting park staff to any potential fire hazards they may see while visiting.
Conditions will be monitored on a daily basis.Read more

Library Presents Magic And Comedy Show For Families
A free, live performance by comic magician Jim McClenahan will be featured at the New Rochelle Public Library on Saturday, April 14th, at 2:00 pm. The popular magician-comedian is returning to the Ossie Davis Theater with new tricks and surprises to delight children of all ages – and their parents and grandparents. Jim’s terrific blend of awesome tricks, side splitting jokes and high levels of energy guarantees a great time. His warm presentation, wacky stunts and zany humor is a winning combination each time he performs. Seating for the performance is on a first-come, first served basis, to the 145-seat capacity of the theater.
The free program is a BID Family Day event, made possible through a partnership of the New Rochelle Downtown BID (Business Improvement District) with the New Rochelle Public Library, the City School District & PTA Council, and the Department of Parks & Recreation.Read more
