When Mila Levine began writing music, she never expected that it would be useful in her career. But as Director of Recreation at United Hebrew of New Rochelle, she has found her musical background to be a tremendous help in bringing the creative process to the residents. Songwriting is now on the recreation calendar on a regular basis at United Hebrew, where the residents of the new nursing home and rehabilitation pavilion use their creative juices to write new songs.
“I just love to assist our residents in expanding their minds and creating new songs. We start with a brainstorming session where new concepts for songs can flow.” remarks Ms. Levine, “Our residents’ ideas and inspirational thoughts continue to amaze me.”Read more
New Rochelle, NY (January, 2011). February is Black History Month and each year the Office of Student Development at Iona College pays tribute to it with a variety of on-campus offerings. This year, the group has joined forces with the Iona Council on the Arts to present the following events:
On Tuesday, February 1 at noon, there will be an opening ceremony, featuring "King's Dream", a live performance and multi-media presentation by Key Arts Productions which offers a an inspiring tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It will be held in the LaPenta Student Union End Zone. Join in celebrating King's legacy and his vision of tolerance, diversity and peace!
Also opening that day will be a gallery exhibition in the Brother Kenneth Chapman Gallery. New Rochelle curator and artist Peridot Smith brings together a group of male and female artists of varying ages and media whose work speaks to the question of the black experience. President Obama will soon give his State of the Union Address. Andrew Cuomo just gave his State of the State Address. Supervisor Valerie O'Keefe of the Town of Mamaroneck just gave her annual State of the Town address. These reports on the state of the country, the state and other municipalities happen at the beginning of the year, every January. So why does New Rochelle hold its State of the City address in March? By March the year is almost one-quarter over. The City just gathered people for a New Year's Day Inauguration event. Why not combine the two? The Council just approved the 2011 budget? Doesn't it make sense to then have the Mayor or City Manager give some sort of report on the previous year and projections for the coming year? Who even makes this decision? The Chamber of Commerce of New Rochelle hosts the event. They have to coordinate with the Mayor. Richard St. Paul has already proposed creating a Commission to review the City Charter. Perhaps it is time to require that the State of the City address be given at a specific time.Read more
