NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Musicians on stilts, giant bubbles, games and crafts are all part of the fun scheduled for the New Rochelle Public Library’s Summer Reading Kick-off event on Saturday, June 23rd, from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. “Libraries Rock” is the theme of the 2018 Summer Reading Game, and NRPL will be celebrating   “reading rock stars” to help inspire children to soak-up a summer of reading pleasure.

The June 23rd Kick-off event will allow parents the opportunity to register their children in pre-K through Grade 5 for the summer reading incentive game.  Each child registering will receive materials to keep track of the books they read so that they can win prizes throughout the summer and receive an invitation to the End of Summer Reading Party. The Summer Reading Kick-off Party is sponsored by the Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library and the New Rochelle Downtown Business Improvement District (BID).

From July 9th - August 28th, a full slate of free summer programs for preschool and elementary school students will be offered at the main library and the Huguenot Children’s Library, including week-long  workshops in architecture, creative writing, Mexican dance, and workshops on New Rochelle’s history and natural environment, as well as programs in the Ossie Davis Theater such as live shows, science and animal presentations, international music and dance performances, and family films. For the full listing, visit nrpl.org or call (914) 813-3706 for a brochure.

Children read more when they see adults around them reading, so the library is again encouraging adults and teens ages 16 and older to participate in the Summer Reading Bingo Game. Participants can visit the library for a Summer Reading Bingo Card or download it from www.nrpl.org, and then spend their summer reading great books for great prizes. As participants read through the summer, they will complete appropriate squares.  Once a vertical or diagonal line is completed, the card can be submitted for a drawing of many prizes. Or, participants can keep reading to complete all 25 squares, and submit the card for a grand prize.  Cards may be submitted in person, by mail, by posting a picture of the card on Instagram, Twitter, or the library’s Facebook page, by September 4, 2018.
