WCPDHutchArrest Carvalho AlmeidaWestchester County Police arrested two Massachusetts men yesterday and seized more than 1,000 Oxycodone pills and a 9-mm semi-automatic handgun.

Police Officer Stephen Stromberg was on patrol on the eastbound Cross County Parkway at 10:36 a.m. when he observed a 2005 Nissan Altima that was missing its front license plate. He followed the vehicle on to the northbound Hutchinson River Parkway and stopped it in the vicinity of North Avenue in New Rochelle.

Stromberg removed the driver from the vehicle to interview him. When backup officers arrived, the driver, Ryan Carvalho, 26, of Fall River, Mass., threw a plastic bag into a nearby wooded area and struggled briefly with Officers Jaoquim Brito and Christopher Neuhs before being subdued.

The bag, which was recovered, contained 1,088 Oxycodone pills.

The passenger in the vehicle was also taken into custody. During a subsequent search of the vehicle, a 9 mm Smith & Wesson handgun was found in the glove compartment and a small amount of marijuana was discovered in the car as well.

Carvalho was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance With Intent to Sell, felonies; Obstructing Governmental Administration 2nd Degree, a misdemeanor; and Unlawful Possession of Marijuana, a violation.

The passenger, James Almeida, 28, of Fall River, Mass., was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree.

Both men were arraigned today in New Rochelle City Court and are being held in lieu of bail at the Westchester County Jail in Valhalla.

The seizure of prescription medication by the county police is the third such incident on the Hutch this month. On Jan. 24, Brito arrested a Rhode Island motorist after finding him in possession of 373 Oxycodone pills. On Jan. 17, Stromberg arrested a Connecticut driver after finding him in possession of 453 Oxycodone pills and 43 Opana tablets.

Also in January, county police Det. Joseph Berardi arrested a Manhattan man who was found with 100 bags of heroin during a traffic stop on the Hutch in Harrison.
