NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Gustavo Barbosa, who has served 13 years as a house principal in New Rochelle High School, has been named the new Secondary School Social Studies Chairperson. The New Rochelle Board of Education appointed him to the post on June 6.

In his new position, Barbosa will oversee social studies curriculum spanning grades 6 through 12, in the high school and the two middle schools, ensuring that instructional standards are being implemented. He will also be responsible for evaluating social studies teachers and making sure that they are using best practices.

“Mr. Barbosa has proven to be an excellent and well-respected member of the faculty,” said Superintendent Dr. Brian Osborne. “His experience teaching social studies and as an administrator makes him a perfect choice to chair the social studies department.”

Before he joined the New Rochelle schools in 2004, Barbosa spent almost a decade in the Poughkeepsie, N.Y. schools as a social studies teacher, program coordinator and assistant principal. In his new position, beginning July 1, he replaces Steve Goldberg, who is retiring after 30 years in the New Rochelle schools.

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to use my passion for Social Studies and civic engagement to continue to serve the students and families of the New Rochelle schools,” Barbosa said.
