NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Behind two assists from sophomore Marcos Nunez, the Iona College men’s soccer team won their second consecutive MAAC contest Saturday afternoon on the road against the Siena Saints.

The Gaels scored their first of the day in the 16th minute when Nunez fed a pass to Luis Mendoza at the top of the box, where he then fired in a shot just under the cross bar for his second goal of the season.

Nunez recorded his second assist in the second half when he fed freshman Daniel Ocana Garcia on a two on one fast break; the one-time MAAC Rookie of the Week rocketed a shot just inside the left post to record his first net-finder of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Julian Petrello recorded his fourth shutout of the season for Iona, saving six Siena shots, five in the second half. In addition, in his 16th career shutout at Iona, Petrello helped navigate the Gael defense in their defending of nine Saints corner kick opportunities.

Iona only fired three shots total in the game compared to Siena’s 17.

This Wednesday, Oct. 21, the Maroon & Gold travel to Jersey City, NJ to take on the Peacocks of Saint Peter’s. Game is scheduled to begin at 2 pm.
