Iona Women’s Water Polo Completes 4-0 Lancer Invitational

RIVERSIDE, CA – The Iona College women’s water polo team wrapped up its west coast swing Saturday with a pair of victories at the 2015 Lancer Invitational hosted by California Baptist University

In an opening match that featured four ties and three lead changes, the Gaels came from behind for a 10-8 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The team then defeated Concordia 10-6 later in the day.

The Gaels finish their annual California road trip with a 4-1 record, and hold a 13-9 mark overall.

Against CMS, freshman Hannah Schultz led the Gaels with five goals. Junior Dana Andrea hit two, while junior Rebecca Mathews, junior Taylor Silva, and freshman Paige Neary had one goal each.

Freshman goalie Britten Vilander recorded no saves in the first half, and junior goalie Dana Delucchi had five saves in the second half. On defense, Silva drew three CMS kickouts and Schultz forced two. Junior Meghan Mahoney and Andrea had four steals each. Andrea won all four swimoffs.

Against Concordia, Schultz and Neary each recorded three goals, while Andrea found the net twice. Mathews and senior Jordan Carmody each tallied one goal each. In net, Delucchi made 12 saves.

The Gaels begin MAAC play Sunday, Mar. 22 in Poughkeepsie, NY.
