NEW ROCHELLE, NY — These super savvy investors from Isaac E. Young Middle School won the Spring 2017 New York State: Lower Hudson Valley/Westchester County Stock Market Game for their level, bringing their school its second consecutive victory in the annual contest.

Sixth-graders Brittani Varela, Kaediah Barratt, and Joseph Ugalde-Aguilar came in first out of 206 middle schools in the competition. They finished 17th out of 1940 schools overall, including middle and high schools.

But by choosing the right investments for a hypothetical $100,000 – turning it into a would-be $115,775 over 12 weeks – they didn’t just beat their regional rivals; they also performed better than the pros. With those results, they finished 12% above the S&P 500 index.

The team, which took on the nickname “The Money Makers,” was advised by math teacher Calvin Heyward. To find out how they did it, see the full article – and find more district news – at www.nred.org.
