NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona College men’s soccer team fell to Marist in Poughkeepsie, NY, 3-1.  The Gaels lone goal came from sophomore Killian Colombie.

Marist got its first goal in the ninth minute on a penalty kick opportunity.  Sophomore Simon Lund Jorgeson stepped up to the dot and buried it into the left side to five the Red Foxes a 1-0 lead.

The Gaels attempted to answer with a pair of on-net chances from junior Luis Mendoza and senior Oscar Gonzalez midway through the first half.  Following a pair of saves from junior Mark Rajovic, the Red Foxes extended their lead with the eventual game-winning goal by sophomore Cameron Harr in the 33rd minute.

Iona peppered the Marist defense in the opening of the second half, leading to Colombie’s goal in the 50th minute.

Soon after the Maroon & Gold got within one, the Red Foxes responded by putting three shots on goal in a 60 second stretch.  The constant siege led to an insurance score by junior Brandon Curtis in the 55th minute.

Following the tally, neither team recorded a shot until the 75th minute when sophomore Daniel Huertas finally got the offensive flow going again.  The Gaels’ leading goal-scorer fired two more shots off before the final buzzer sounded, but the Maroon & Gold offense couldn’t muster a comeback attempt.

Huertas led Iona with four shots in the game.  Sophomore Daniel Ocana, Mendoza, Colombie and Gonzalez all had two attempts, and junior Marcos Nunez and sophomore Humbert Ferrer each had one.

Freshman Juan Alcantara had three saves in net.

Iona has the upcoming weekend off, and they’ll use it to prep for the Quinnipiac Bobcats who’ll be travelling to New Rochelle on Wednesday, Oct. 12.
