NEW ROCHELLE, NY — It’s fitting that the 35-4, #17-ranked Monroe Mustangs women’s volleyball team would win the Region Championship with a 3-0 shutout, because they have made a habit of riding roughshod over lesser opponents all season long. In fact of their 35 wins, 29 of them have been by 3-0 blankings. And so on Saturday against Harford, a team they had defeated via shutout earlier in the season, they won the title in overwhelming fashion, 25-14, 25-14, 25-10.

Monroe had a balanced attack in the one-game Region final. Sophomore Lee Ann Ocasio had eight kills in her fifteen chances, but the leading offensive player was freshman Ashley Ramos who was nine for fifteen with a .533 accuracy rate.

Defensively, that duo was also solid. Ramos had eight digs and Ocasio six.

Sophomores Indira Rojas had fourteen assists and Edmarie Freytes had eleven.

Through this remarkable season, Monroe won 23-straight matches, including 63-straight set wins.

Monroe won Region and District titles in 2012 and 2013 and finished in the National Tournament as one of the nation’s top teams. This is their first season in Division I.

As a result of Saturday’s win, Monroe will advance to the District Tournament on November 8-9 in Jefferson, MO.
