New Rochelle Cops Nab Machete Madman

New Rochelle police arrested a man after an early morning incident involving a machete in the West End of New Rochelle.

The man broke several windows of a first floor apartment along the 2nd Street side of the building at 2 Lafayette Avenue using a machete in an attempt to gain access.

New Rochelle Police received calls from frightened residents shortly before 7 a.m. reporting a man breaking windows with a machete saying he wanted to kill someone.

Witnesses at the scene told police the machete was about 18 inches long.

Police surrounded the building and conducted a search of the entire building. The man was found hiding in the building.

The suspect told police he threw the machete out the back window of the building. Police were searching for the weapon but had not yet located it at this time. Officers on the scene reported that the man appeared to be heavily intoxicated.

After the suspect was taken to New Rochelle police headquarters he became belligerent towards officers, additional units were called back to police headquarter.

UPDATE: police have recovered evidence from the scene, described as a “knife”.

Francisco santosUPDATE: The man arrested by New Rochelle Police at 2 Lafayette Avenue is Francisco Santos, 32, of 1 Odell Place in New Rochelle, NY.

Santos was charged with Criminal Mischief In The Third Degree.

The complaint reads “the defendant…did intentionally damage the property of another by shattering windows at the above location using a machete and did also damage doors and cabinetry at the above location.

Santos is due back in court on May 15th.

Scanner traffic on Monday was that he had a prior arrest for assault in 2008 and a Code Violation.
