New Rochelle Helicopter Mystery Resolved with Happy Ending

ShareThis

Project Lifesaver.jpgOn the night of August 22nd, a number of New Rochelle residents observed a Westchester County helicopter searching the area with its spotlight near the Hutchison River Parkway and the Cross County Parkway. Given the flurry of burglaries last winter and spring, some worried that the police were chasing a burglar in the area.

Talk of the Sound confirmed today with the Westchester County Police that the helicopter was responding to a Project Lifesaver call from New Rochelle Police. Under the Project Lifesaver program, persons suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia who have a history of wandering away are fitted with a special tracking bracelet. Specially trained and equipped county and local police officers are able to locate missing persons wearing the bracelet by tracing a radio signal that it emits.

The man was eventually located through the combined efforts of the New Rochelle and Westchester County police.
