New Rochelle Police Department Crushes North End Burglary Spree

Written By: Robert Cox

NRPD Crime Data June 2010.jpgThe New Rochelle Police Department has all but ended the burglary problems that plagued the North End of New Rochelle earlier this year, recent crime data shows. After a six month period which saw more than two dozen attempted and completed burglaries, from late 2009 until March 2010, the police responded with stepped up patrols, deploying officers in unmarked markers, conducting license plate sweeps and other measures officials did not wish to disclosed. The result: june one successful burglary in New Rochelle’s tony North End neighborhoods.

Talk of the Sound first broke the story of the burglary spree in April: Team of Burglars Plague North End of New Rochelle; 21 Burglaries, 4 Attempted in Past Six Months

The response of City officials and the New Rochelle Police Department was overwhelming and highly effective. June 2010 data for burglaries and attempted burglaries shows just one successful burglary in the North End and one attempted burglary. The effect of increased vigilance was felt all across the City as burglaries were down throughout the City.

  1. The story was broken to the
The story was broken to the readers on TOTS long after the NRPD reached out to the community. The letter received by my neighborhood association with the notification, crime prevention tips and the NRPD’s offer to speak at neighborhood meetings was recieved in late February. Nothing was being “covered up”. Just because you didn’t hear about it, you shouldn’t make such assumptions.

  2. Bravo…NOT NRPD are LAZY
If the NRPD wasn’t sitting on their a#*^es the burglaries would not have gotten so out of hand. Only after all of the local news stations ran the story did the NRPD do anything to combat the issue. And they didn’t even catch the burglary ring. I lived in NYC for 12 years and the cops in New Rochelle are laughable in comparison. How can you praise a PD that makes no arrests in over two dozen burglaries/ attempts. You are way off base on this one.

    1. LSH…..
The NYPD are a GREAT organization, no doubt about it. Some of the hardest working police officers in the world. They are afforded all the tools needed to not only fight crime, but are on the front lines of the terrorism fight as well. You just can’t compare the departments, it’s like comparing apples and oranges.
New Rochelle’s PD is one of the most successful departments, in crime prevention, in the country. Not the county, the country! New Rochelle has been rated the 5th safest city of its size in the country for the last several years according to the FBI statistics that were shown on this site several months back (Sorry, couldn’t find the link). That being said, I believe it could easily be the safest city of its size if it wasn’t in such close proximately to your beloved NYC. Whatever measures the NRPD are taking in crime prevention seem to be working. If it wasn’t, New Rochelle would be as bad as other comparable local cities such as Mt. Vernon, Yonkers, Peekskill, Brewster and Newburgh. Still not convinced? There is a reason New Rochelle dosen’t have the problems those cities have…it is directly because of the hard work the men and women of the NRPD provide on a daily basis and the tools needed to do so.
But don’t worry LSH, when you call for help, the NRPD will be there, responding faster than you or the NYPD could only dream of!
LSH…How involved in the community are you? Did you attend the several neighborhood meetings that were held BEFORE the press ran the story? Did your neighborhood association respond to the letters the NRPD sent out in February, informing them of the problem? Or, maybe, it’s just sour grapes on your part. Are you just pissed off that you moved from NYC? Are you just pissed off at the “lazy” cops who gave you a ticket?
Do you really believe that the NYPD solves EVERY crime spree it has to deal with? This particular “crime spree” was regional..The same suspects were believed to of did the same things in several neighboring communities. Nobody else made arrests either as far as I know. Get real or, better yet, do us a favor and move back to NYC.

      1. New Rochelle Police is a great department.
Once they make something a priority which comes from the top….
Until the story was published here @ Talk of the Sound the priority at the Department and in City Management was to keep it under wraps don’t make too much noise about it. The guys on the beat would prefer to do the job rather than just let it all happen around them.
Any problems with this department comes from above.
Every incident in New Rochelle is always consider in quotes from the Brass in the Dept. ” An Isolated Incident.”
This City is hard to Police in the South they have real problems that Section 8, Welfare and illegal immigrants brings while up North they must Police with tact and do the job without appearing too heavy handed to the Citizenry.
This is a tough job and the officers on the street do a proffesional job no matter the area they are working in. In the end if I was to fix anything it would be up high within the department and high up in City Management.
