NEW ROCHELLE, NY — On Thursday, February 4, the City School District of New Rochelle kicks off its ambitious Black History Month initiative with David Banks, author of Soar: How Boys Learn, Succeed, and Develop Character. Banks will speak with students, who will also be able to attend College Resource Night for Black Students, strategically scheduled the same evening.

Next, on Thursday, February 11, the New Rochelle community is invited to attend Quién Eres Tu?: A Shared History in the Americas. This far-reaching panel discussion, in partnership with MBK New Rochelle, features Dr. Nereida Segura-Rico, Associate Professor of Spanish, College of New Rochelle; Dr. Teresa Delgado, Program Director, Peace and Justice Studies, Iona College; Luis Quiros, Professor of Sociology, Fordham University; Gustavo Barbosa, New Rochelle High School “House I” Principal and Advisor to the Hispanic Culture Club; Reginald Richardson, Principal of New Rochelle High School and Co-Chair, My Brother’s Keeper New Rochelle; and special moderator, Camille Edwards-Thomas, New Rochelle High School “House II” Principal and MBK New Rochelle Ambassadors Liaison.

The above is followed by a remarkable opportunity for students during Mid-winter Recess, Tuesday, February 16-Saturday, February 20. Students in grades 9-12 are invited to participate in a one-week Alvin Ailey Dance Intensive.

The culminating district-wide event takes place Saturday, February 27. The Spoken Word and Art Exhibit showcases live student performances, vendors selling African arts and crafts, and authors selling and signing copies of their books. This special event commemorates the life and legacy of award-winning actress, activist, and New Rochelle resident Ruby Dee.
