New Rochelle High School Economics teacher Darren Gurney is one of three New York teachers who will receive a 2014 Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Teaching Champion Award from the Council for Economic Education (CEE), at a ceremony held in New York City's Pierre Hotel. The award is given to outstanding educators who successfully integrate economics and financial literacy education into everyday learning in classrooms.
Darren Gurney teaches his New Rochelle High School students about incentives, inflation, business formation, consequences of debt, and other microeconomic concepts using a monetary system he created called the "Gurney Greenback Exchange". His students can earn Greenbacks in a variety of ways- by helping others, contributing to class discussion, even starting an in-class business.
