Obituary: Jane C. (Allen) Gobel (1922 – 2012)

Mrs. Jane C. (Allen) Gobel, age 90, passed away on Monday, August 27, 2012, at her daughter’s home in Ithaca, NY, surrounded by her loving family.

Jane was born on August 5, 1922, in Albany, NY, to William H. Allen and Helen Huth Allen. She graduated from the Academy of the Holy Names and the College of St. Rose in Albany. Jane married her college sweetheart, William C. Gobel (dec. 1978) in 1947. While Bill was in the FBI, the young couple lived in California and Richland, Washington, before moving back east to Albany and subsequently to Utica, NY. Jane was a homemaker who devoted herself to raising and caring for her five children. In the early 70’s, she was a Coordinator for the Headstart Program in Utica. She developed and became the first Regional Coordinator for the Adolescent Parent Program of Catholic Charities. After retirement, she remained active on the Hope House board and enjoyed a long, rewarding life to the fullest filled with travel, bridge and many activities with her dear friends, the Catholic Women’s Club, Saint Rose Club, her children and 12 grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, William C. Gobel, Jr., from Utica, NY, who lovingly and devotedly cared for her during her final years, along with her daughter, Ellen.

She is survived by her four children, Patricia G. Micek, of New Rochelle, NY, Ellen G. Walsh and husband, Kevin, of Ithaca, NY, Catherine G. Farrell, of Orinda, California, and Paul A. Gobel and wife, Ann, of Weehawken, NJ; her twelve grandchildren, Colin and Caitlin Micek, Sarah, Casey, Catherine, Patrick and Michael Walsh, James Macklin and Jake Farrell, and William, Jack and Thomas Gobel; and her brother, William H. Allen, Jr., of Albany, NY.

Family will greet friends in church vestibule, 10:45-11:30 AM, followed by the Funeral Mass and Celebration of Jane’s Life this Thursday, August 30th, at 11:30 AM at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Utica. Burial will be immediately following the ceremony at Mt. Olivet.
