Philip Hayes Gregware Obituary

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Philip Hayes Gregware of New Rochelle, NY passed away on Friday, November 4th . He was 87 years of age.

Born in Troy, NY to Fred and Greta Gregware, Philip was the youngest of three children. The family moved to Bronxville, NY when Philip was 15. He grew up in Bronxville and was a graduate of The Albany Academy and Williams College.

After graduation, Philip served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War and retired with the rank of Captain. He was a proud Marine and flew the Marine Corps flag over his home everyday.

Philip had a very successful business career, which began in Pittsburgh, PA. Pittsburgh would hold a special place in his heart for not only being the starting point of his business career, but also where he would marry the love of his life, his wife, Catharine. The couple would relocate for business and eventually settle in Pelham Manor, NY to raise their family. Philip would hold positions as Vice President and Corporate Officer of The Crane Company and Vice President of ITT Grinnell Corporation. He would retire in 1996 from the Fire End and Crocker Company in Elmsford, NY.

A family man at heart, Philip cherished family vacations, but he also loved his home on the Esplanade. His family was his joy. Philip enjoyed the outdoors and especially loved to fish, ski and play golf. He was a loyal member of the Pelham Country Club for 47 years. 

A man of constant faith, Philip was a parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help – St. Catharine’s Church of the Pelhams for many years.

Philip is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Catharine and their two sons James (Eileen) and Steven (Kiki). He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: Ryan, Matthew, Samantha and Kiki’s daughters, Quinn and Peyton. He will be missed by his niece, Peggy Steinbacher of Indianapolis, IN. 

Philip is pre-deceased by his eldest son, Philip Jr.

A celebration of Philip’s life will take place at the Pelham Funeral Home, 64 Lincoln Avenue, Pelham, NY, on Monday November 7th from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 559 Pelham Manor Road, Pelham Manor, NY, on Tuesday November 8th at 9:45 AM. Private interment will be Wednesday, November 9th at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Philip’s name be made to Marine’s Toys for Tots or Jansen Hospice and Palliative Care of Scarsdale, NY.
