Sound Shore Extended Care Center Earns 4-Star Rating

Written By: Talk of the Sound News

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Sound Shore Medical Center is pleased to report its Schaffer Extended Care Center’s 4-star ranking in the recently released Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services report.

This Medicare Nursing Home ranking system offers consumers the ability to compare nursing homes. Using health inspection ratings over the last three years, in 10 Quality Measures, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid assigns stars for the level of quality. This assessment reviews a facility’s performance including staffing with attention to the number of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and Nursing Aides per resident/per day.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ report confirms that nursing homes affiliated with hospitals and those that are not-for-profit usually score higher than their counterparts. Both of these benefits apply to Schaffer. The 4-Star Overall Rating – which includes 4 stars in each of the 10 areas of measure – places Schaffer in the top 1/3 of more than 16,000 nursing homes nationally.

Speaking about the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services recent report, John R. Spicer, President and CEO of Sound Shore Medical Center, said, “While the Center’s Rating System provides a benchmark, individual’s considering placement for a loved one should still rely on their personal reaction during an onsite visit. A reaction to an in-person observation is vital and should include considerations, such as: Are the residents engaged? Is there good interaction between patients and care staff? Is the facility orderly and clean? Is the staff open to your questions? Can you see your loved one in this setting?” He concluded, “These ratings should help guide a selection, but they should be only one of many factors that determine a placement decision.”

“A decision about extended care placement for a loved one is complex. But using the rating system to choose a top-scoring – 4 or 5 star – extended care provider, along with several on-site visits may make the decision a little easier for concerned family members”, commented Vice President for Long Term Care/Administrator of Schaffer Extended Care Center, Susan A. Sales.

  1. What a house of horror!
This nursing home is a perfect example of what is wrong with the federal and state rating system. This place does not even deserve a 1 star.

I was there recently and this place is severely understaffed, and whatever staff they do have is not working much and is not being supervised.

A nurses aide assaulted a family member and is abusive to residents but has not been removed from the floor despite my warnings that she is dangerous.

Patients are dirty and are not being fed or properly hydrated.

This is the only nursing home that I’ve been to that does not have a security guard especially at night. Anyone can visit without being stopped. No one is required to sign in.

Your loved one is in danger at this facility. The Department of Health does not give a damn about the residents in this facility.

  2. These people are nuts
Whomever conducted this was either high on drugs or a mental person. This place is a DUMP the service there is horrible they keep laying off staff the rooms are in horrible shape and the place is a mess.
The NYS board of health should be called into this place.
I don’t know a person that likes this place.
Once you check in to this DUMP you are more than likely not checking out because between the hospital and this home they will kill you.
