ACS RoadtoRecovery(New Rochelle, NY) — Sound Shore Medical Center (SSMC) is pleased to announce its new partnership with the American Cancer Society (American Cancer Society) and TransCare to offer another ACS program – Road to Recovery. The Program provides free transportation to treatments for cancer patients.

The ACS Road to Recovery Program is being added to southern Westchester County through Sound Shore Medical Center and TransCare. While this free Program relies primarily on American Cancer Society-trained volunteer drivers, TransCare has agreed to be a backup for the Road to Recovery Program in the Sound Shore Medical Center service area. As a medical transportation provider for SSMC, TransCare will offer their trained supervisors whenever the pool of ACS volunteer drivers is unavailable. As with all Road to Recovery volunteer drivers, TransCare will supply needed transportation for cancer-related treatment appointments, including radiation and chemotherapy. For cancer patients and their families, this service is a vital resource and one that brings continuity of treatment and peace of mind.

Commenting on the new partnership, Connie Bordenga, Director of Patient and Family Services at the American Cancer Society said, “Transportation may seem basic, but it can be a major barrier to accessing cancer treatment that is a key factor in cancer survival rates.” TransCare Senior Vice President, Jim O’Connor added, “Transportation is our area of expertise, it’s what we do every day, so partnering with the American Cancer Society and Sound Shore Medical Center to help get people to treatment is a natural fit.”

John R. Spicer, president and CEO of Sound Shore Medical Center remarked on the new relationship by saying, “Since we are the home to the Goldstein Cancer Center, we are always interested in Programs that benefit cancer patients.” He concluded, “We are pleased to join the Road to Recovery family.”

Sound Shore Medical Center is accredited by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons – a distinction held by only 25% of hospitals treating cancer patients. The SSMC Cancer Program also includes a state-of-the-art Breast Center that provides clinical and support services – from screening and diagnosis to treatment and counseling.
