NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- A heart-warming video documents a wonderful new after-school program piloted at William B. Ward Elementary School in New Rochelle to pair special needs students with regular education students as mentors.
It Takes a Village to Educate a Child, Inc. is a community service program whose mission is to prepare special needs and typically developing children to excel socially and emotionally.
"It Takes a Village to Educate a Child" was founded by Sonia Marshall-Brown in partnership with Westchester Jewish Community Services. The pilot program is "Cooperative Play Skills with Lego Robotics".
The video features familiar faces such as Principal Franco Miele, School Board Member Dr. Pamela Davis, Ann Maria Rooney, Cidalia Vincitore and others.
Parents of special needs children in the program all reported increased self-esteem and an improved ability to relate to their peers.
