Virginia Lockwood Obituary

Virginia Mary Emmerson Lockwood, age 68, died at home last week after a brief, unexpected illness.

Virginia was born in New Rochelle, NY where she lived for over 55 years, and had been residing in Stamford CT for the past several years.

Virginia was born September 26, 1946 to the late Walter and Lorraine Emmerson of New Rochelle NY. She was one of six children. She is survived by a sister Jean and brother Michael. She was predeceased by a brother Walter and two sisters Cathy and Judy. She is also survived by her two children: Robert Lockwood and his wife Paige of Bethel CT and Renee Lockwood of Arlington MA, and her two beloved grandchildren Blaire and John. She leaves behind many nephews, nieces, cousins, and countless friends.

Virginia received her Bachelor’s Degree from the College of New Rochelle and her Master’s Degree in Special Education from Lehman College. She was an energetic and creative Special Education teacher for many years before retiring. More recently she enjoyed being a volunteer at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich. For most of her life Virginia was an avid sailor. She sailed the family boat out of New Rochelle Harbor and Hamburg Cove. In recent years she was an active member of Singles Under Sail using her exceptional sailing skills on friends vessels and sharing her love of being on the water. She was also an adventurous traveler, sailing in the Greek Islands and the Caribbean, and touring Alaska, Ireland, Italy, Spain and Hawaii as well as camping and hiking in the US National Parks.

Virginia’s family and friends will be celebrating her life on Sunday March 15th from 1-4 PM at Shippan’s Thomas M Gallagher Funeral Home, (next to the Knights of Columbus) 453 Shippan Avenue, Stamford, CT.
