NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Monroe College volleyball team kept a pair of streaks alive over the weekend as they improved to 20-0 to open the year.  Additionally, they failed to drop a set in both matches, beating Catawba Valley 3-0 and Northern Virginia, 3-0.   The team has dropped just two sets all season.

In the win over Catawba, Barbara Maximiano had a match-best 13 kills.  Ashely Ramos led the team with 11 digs and Indira Rojas recorded 23 assists.  The scores of the sets were 25-21, 25-22 and 25-15.

Set one was back and forth with both sides being tied at 16-16.  From there, Monroe scored four straight points to take control of the set.  A pair of attack errors and two Maximiano kills accounted for the points.  A Ramos kill finished the set for Monroe.

The second set was also tied late, at 17-all.  From there, Catawba jumped ahead to lead 22-17.  The Mustangs fought back and scored eight straight points to take the set, 25-22.  The final eight points came from three Karen Souza aces, three Maximiano kills and two attack errors.

Set three went to Monroe, 25-15.  Tied of the seesaw action and tied at 10-10, Monroe closed out the match with a 15-5 run.

The second match of the day saw the Mustangs beat Northern Virginia, 25-12, 25-11 and 25-16.  Monroe took an 11-3 lead in set one and never looked back.  The lead got as large as 16 points on a Maximiano kill that made the score 21-5.

Set two had Monroe build a 14-3 advantage before winning 25-11.  The final point came from a Maximiano serve that was misplayed.

Set three went to Monroe after pulling away late.  A 6-0 run put the Mustangs up, 23-14 and put the game out of reach.  Alexis Booker finished the match off with a kill.

The Monroe College volleyball team returns to action on Tuesday, September 22, when they face Nassau Community College in Garden City, New York.  The first serve is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
