Women’s Basketball Goes 2-1 at Monroe College Invitational

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Monroe College Women's Basketball team won two of three games at the Monroe College Invitational this weekend at the MAC. The team picked up wins over Community College of Rhode Island and Monroe Community College, but fell in overtime to Baltimore City Community College. Shania Johnson was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

The Mustangs opened play on Friday with a 90-38 victory over CCRI. Five Monroe players reached double-figures in scoring. Johnson scored a game-high 24 points on 7-14 shooting. Camilla Kilinc chipped in with 13 points, while Lisana Burnett, Mercy Amechi, and Cristina Soriano all finished with 10 points each. The largest lead of the game for Monroe was 55 points, on an Amechi layup with 2:14 left.

Game two was the most hard-fought of the tournament. The Mustangs fell to Baltimore City, 81-78, in overtime. Monroe trailed by 19 points with 8:50 to go, but Johnson led her teammates in a scoring surge late in the game, and hit a pair of foul shots in the closing seconds to send the contest into extra time. Baltimore City pulled away for the win in overtime. Johnson led the team with 33 points, and Soriano earned a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds.

The final game of the day saw the Mustangs edge Monroe Community College, 80-79. Soriano sunk a foul shot at the end of the game to lift the Mustangs to the victory. Johnson finished with 25 points, while Soriano had another double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Fatoumata Coulibaly scored ten points, grabbed eight rebounds, and led the team with four assists.

The team is now 5-2 on the season and will play a home game on Tuesday, November 22, against Mohawk Valley Community College at 8:00 PM.
