NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- With nine runs throughout the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, Fordham University picked up a 10-3 home victory against the Iona College baseball team this afternoon in non-conference action.
Trailing 1-0 going into the fifth inning, Lou Matarazzo put the Gaels (5-8) ahead 3-1 with a three-run blast to left center on a full count to score Sean Breen and Fran Kinsey. Kinsey led off the inning with a single through the left side before Breen walked on four pitches to set up the inning.
The Rams (7-9) cut into the lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth as Reiss Knehr hit a 2-2 pitch over the right field fence to lead off the inning. With one pitch in the seventh inning, Fordham jumped back into the lead as Jason Lundy connected on a full count, three-run homerun to left field to put the hosts ahead 5-3.
Another three-run homerun in the eighth increased the Rams lead to 8-3 as Mark Donadio picked up the RBIs with a fence clearing hit to left field. A pair of RBI singles concluded the scoring for Fordham in the eighth and secured the 10-3 victory as the Gaels were held scoreless in the ninth.
Matarazzo picked up two hits for the Maroon & Gold, including the homerun, while Breen tallied four walks on the day. Kinsey also added two hits with the scored run. On the mound, Joe DeRosa opened the game with three innings and a strikeout before turning over to Andrew Camiolo for two shutout innings and a strikeout.
Kyle Martin earned his third victory on the season for Fordham with 2.1 innings of work throughout the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, striking out five and not allowing a walk. The Rams totaled 11 hits on the afternoon.
Iona opens MAAC play this weekend with a three-game series at Marist starting with a noon doubleheader on Saturday in Poughkeepsie.
