Here's some good news in case you missed it, the Journal News is reporting that all election districts have completed counting their votes and the Republicans seem to have broken the Democrats 12-5 super-majority grip on the Westchester County Board of Legislature. Tallies still need to include absentee & affidavit ballots but this is good, no excellent, news.

With their super-majority, the Democrats had over-ridden something like 247 Astorino spending bill vetoes. Those days appear to be over now & the composition of the new board will likely be 10 Democrats & 7 Republicans.

Sheila Marcotte who represents parts of New Rochelle appears to be one of the lucky ones after trailing by 275 on election night, she's now up by 47 over John Fitzpatrick. Congratulations to Sheila!

As co-chairperson of the Save Our Armory Committee I and our secretary Lorraine Pierce sat in Senator Klein’s office to garner his support to save the New Rochelle Armory. Without hesitation or a second thought, Senator Klein pledged his wholehearted support and a few days later memorialized his support in a letter dated October 25, 2006. Senator Klein states; “I am writing this letter in support of your group’s effort to save the New Rochelle Armory. The Armory is a site of significant historical importance to the City of New Rochelle and should be preserved”. Now, less than four years later, Senator Klein has stabbed his New Rochelle constituents in the back by co-sponsoring a bill with Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (S08307) which would allow Mayor Bramson “to sell, alienate and convey waterfront real property”. The Armory is not mentioned by name but if you read the entire bill the coordinates include the Armory. This legislation comes on the same day (6/22) of the special election where Sheila Marcotte, a republican, decisively defeated Greg Varian, a democrat, for Vito Pinto’s vacant county legislator seat.

We endorse Varian, a lawyer from New Rochelle, because of his smarter approach to finding savings — one that properly recognizes that the county can be a catalyst for reducing overall government costs, including by assuming some chores performed by various local governments.

On Sheila Marcotte...

Marcotte, a Republican who serves on the Eastchester Town Board, has a long list of public service. She has been on the town board seven years and has also served as Village of Tuckahoe trustee, planning commissioner and library trustee. These pages have endorsed her in the past, noting her tremendous energy and commitment to local government. But while Marcotte has the edge in terms of government experience, she advocated some positions we found troubling.
