New Rochelle High School Establishes Regular Armed Police Presence

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The City School District of New Rochelle and the City government have come to terms on a plan to provide a daily armed police presence in and around New Rochelle High School.

“Today, we have reached an agreement with the City of New Rochelle to establish a regular armed police presence at NRHS for the remainder of the school year,” said Schools Superintendent Dr. Brian Osborne in a letter to parents. "Police officers will be assigned to monitor school entrances and to patrol the periphery of the school property.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- New Rochelle High School offered a tour of the school and a discussion on school safety to six Long Island high schools that announced 11 days ago that they would not attend an upcoming Model Congress event in light of recent school violence in and around the high school.

There were no takers.

Hockey Team Clinches Share of League C Title

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The New Rochelle High School varsity ice hockey team clinched a share of the League C title on Monday night after a decisive 9-0 win over White Plains High School. It is the team's first league championship since the 2007-2008 season.

The Huguenots finished with a 3-1 league record with wins over Mount Pleasant, Horace Greeley and White Plains and now shares the title with Horace Greeley High School, who also finished with a 3-1 record.

Science Research Students Succeed at Symposium

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Four New Rochelle High School students earned impressive honors at the Westchester-Rockland Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (WR-JSHS) held at John Jay High School in Cross River on February 4.

NRHS Science Research students Zahra Masih, Leora Segal, James Calano and Casandra Chen came back with outstanding results, explained Science Research Program Director Jeff Wuebber, demonstrating their tremendous Science Research expertise.

Board Names Middle School Math Chair

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Tiffany Sassone, an assistant principal and coordinator of the Math Science Partnership Project in Yonkers, will become the next middle school math department chairperson in New Rochelle on March 7.

Sassone was hired Tuesday by the New Rochelle Board of Education to replace John Pratt, who retired. She will maintain the math instructional program, review curriculum materials and supervise the quality of math instruction, among other duties, at Albert Leonard and Isaac E. Young middle schools.

IEYMS Week Dedicated to Friendlier School Atmosphere

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- During "Start with Hello" week at Isaac E. Young Middle School, students joined in a host of activities designed to build new friendships, welcome new students and create a friendlier school atmosphere.

It really does all start with a friendly greeting. The first thing Monday morning, students arrived to schoolmates who are members of the Castle Ambassadors holding up signs that read "Good morning," "Stay positive," and "Have an awesome day!" to greet them.

The Castle Ambassadors also posted friendly notes on lockers.

Former New Rochelle Schools Director Sentenced for Bribery Scheme

Geoffrey S. Berman, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced today that JOHN C. GALLAGHER JR., the former head of Buildings and Grounds at the City of New Rochelle School District, was sentenced to 37 months in prison for his role in a scheme to solicit bribes from an outside contractor to channel school district business to the contractor’s company for bribery. GALLAGHER pled guilty on October 10, 2017, before U.S. District Judge Kenneth M. Karas, who imposed today’s sentence.
