Arts Out Loud Showcases Middle School Students

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Middle school students from throughout the City School District of New Rochelle came together to showcase their poetry, art, music and filmmaking in the fourth annual Arts Out Loud festival on Wednesday.

The students from Isaac E. Young and Albert Leonard Middle Schools recited poems of all manner of topics, including race, loneliness, outer space and home. The event joins students from the two schools as one family and sets them on the path for New Rochelle High School together.

46 Retirees Honored by District with Ceremony

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The City School District of New Rochelle honored 46 retirees in an annual ceremony on Tuesday. The employees filled a wide range of roles and included teachers, social workers, cooks, laborers and more, each contributing in their own way.

"The number of lives you have touched is vast," Superintendent Dr. Brian Osborne said when they were handed certificates in New Rochelle High School. "You've been part of something special, and this district is special because of your contributions."

Seven Sophomores Earn Westlake Science Trophies

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- A dozen sophomores from the Science Research Program at New Rochelle High School entered the Westlake Science Fair recently. Seven came home with trophies.

With two students each finishing in first and third place and three more in second place, the team made a strong showing in a competition with 350 students. It took pace on June 2 at Westlake High School in Thornwood.

New Purchasing Agent to Continue Reducing Costs

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The City School District of New Rochelle has hired

Meilisa Arlt as its new purchasing agent, working in the Business and Administration Office to continue the District's goal of reducing costs while providing more value for the purchases it makes. She will be responsible for the District's purchasing of goods and services, including the administration of the bidding process and contracts for vendors.

Two NRHS Freshmen Raise $37,500 for Pediatric Cancer

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Evan Phillips and Sam Rosenberg are freshman at New Rochelle High School, and lacrosse players. But to Gretchen Witt, co-founder and vice president of Cookies for Kids' Cancer, they are "rock stars."

Phillips and Rosenberg presented Witt on Thursday with a check for $37,500, the sum that they have raised over the past three years with their "Be a Good Cookie Lacrosse Tournament." That included the $13,500 they raised in the most recent one, in April.

District Names Two Key Administrators

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The City School District of New Rochelle named two key administrators on Tuesday, appointing a Trinity Elementary School principal and special education director.

Michael Hilderbrand was named principal of Trinity, replacing Anthony DiCarlo. An educator in the District for 16 years, Hilderbrand took the assistant principal position at Trinity a year ago after serving eight years as a New Rochelle High School house principal. He started in the District as a Spanish teacher in 2002.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The New Rochelle Board of Education listened on Tuesday evening to residents during a public hearing on the proposed $270,381,160 budget for the 2018-2019 school year. The budget stays within the state tax cap, preserves programming and includes funds to add school counselors and several other positions as well as safety and security measures. The public will vote on the budget on June 19.

Davis Chorus to Sing at Lord & Taylor Saturday

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Come see the fifth-graders in the George M. Davis Jr. Elementary School choral group perform at Lord & Taylor in Eastchester at 1 p.m. Saturday. They will sing "Together We Can Change the World" (their class theme) and other songs in a fund-raiser the department store is hosting for the Friends & Family Muscular Dystrophy Association Event. The store is located at 750 White Plains Road (Route 22).

IEYMS Choir Earns Second in Regional Competition

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The Isaac E. Young Middle School's Castle Choir sang their way to second place in the regional Music in the Parks competition in Connecticut, performing "Alterations" by Andrea Ramsey and "Dona Nobis Pacem" by Mary Lynn Lightfoot.

Thirty-six IEYMS seventh and eighth graders performed in the festival at Central Connecticut State University on June 1. They competed with 12 other middle school groups. After the performance the IEYMS singers enjoyed the afternoon in the Nutmeg State, visiting Lake Compounce amusement park in Bristol.
