NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- The City School District of New Rochelle teachers' union will hand out up to 12,000 books - that's $125,000 worth of volumes - in the Trinity Elementary School tomorrow.

The books are free to District students. They'll be handed out in the school at 180 Pelham Road on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or until the books run out.

"Any of the 11,000 students we serve can come and take as many as they want," said Billy Coleman, Executive Vice President of the union, New Rochelle Federation of United School Employees. "We want to give them all away. We don't want to hold on to anything."

Any books left untaken will be distributed to schools in the District.

The books come to the union through a partnership of the organization First Book and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). Coleman personally drove up to Latham, N.Y. yesterday - in a U-Haul van - to collect them from the headquarters of New York State United Teachers, which is affiliated with AFT.
