Written By: Robert Cox

NEW ROCHELLE, NY (March 1, 2023) — After a series of armed robberies in the West End of New Rochelle, members of an NRPD task force arrested a New Rochelle man with a handgun. Following the arrest, the robbery spree appears to have come to an end.

“There were no more reported robberies like these since this arrest,” said New Rochelle Police Captain J. Collins Coyne, Commander of the Criminal Investigation Division.

After New Rochelle Police received reports of three robberies over the course of about a week and a half, all with matching descriptions of the suspects, a task force was assembled. Several detectives and a detective supervisor were deployed in unmarked cars during the time frames of the robberies.

The suspects in each of the three cases were described as 2 to 3 males walking together (in two robberies there were 3 suspects, in the other there were 2). The race of the suspects was described as black in two incidents and Hispanic in the other, all wearing dark colored jackets. In two of these incidents, a firearm was displayed, and in 1 incident the victim was hit with the firearm.

On January 20th, 2023, officers stopped a suspicious person who was found to be in possession of a fully-loaded handgun.

Arrest & Charges:

Justin Young, 19, of New Rochelle, NY.

  • Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2, a C Felony
  • Criminal Trespass – 3, a B Misdemeanor

Young was arraigned before Judge Matthew J. Costa in New Rochelle City Court on January 20, 2023. Bail was set at at $5,000 cash, $25,000 bond $50,000, 10% Partially Secured Surety Bond. Young posted bail in the amount of $5,000.00 cash at the Westchester County jail on January 21 and was released.

He appeared before Judge Jared R. Rice in New Rochelle City Court on January 26. The docket was transferred to the Opportunity Youth Part under Judge Rice on February 16. Young has a return date with OYP on April 6.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This article initially said Young was one of the suspects in the robberies as was described at last week’s Community Police Partnership Board meeting but was edited to clarify that Young is not charged with any involvement in any of the robberies described in the article despite this point being conveyed at the Community Police Partnership Board on February 23 by DC Neil Reynolds.

DC Reynolds: We also had a… recently, an armed robbery task force that we had established due to multiple armed robberies in the West End of New Rochelle. There were a couple of suspects developed and we did an investigation and we made an arrest. And that arrest was for a suspect who was in possession of a weapon, a fully loaded handgun and after that arrest, we have had no more reported robberies. So that was pretty successful for us.
